It would seem very strange for a company like Sony to do this. Are you sure that it is a headphone jack?

Yes, it is. There is no volume control. There are record level controls but they, of course, have no control over the headphone jack. It is the Sony TC-FX45 cassette deck.

I'm not familiar with that cassette deck but I know that "line out" jacks are sometimes mistaken for headphone jacks.
