The downside is that your low impedance source may not be able to swing much in the way of voltage. This may or may not be an issue, depending on the sensitivity of the headphones themselves.

I'm not sure it's just the output impedance that is making them sound dull. My 300-ohm HD800s sounded surprisingly good from the iphone4 headphone output, which had a 0.97-ohm output impedance. (Sounded good, looked ridiculous.) And the Bottlehead Crack (120-ohm output impedance) really makes them sing.
I've been listening to them lots lately, as one of my speaker amps has been on Paul Fargo's bench, frustrating him completely - playing for (almost) forever, then issuing a couple loud pops and bright flashes of light from the chassis, with no scorch signs of anything shorting, while the output remains absolutely perfect and everything measures just fine, then perfect behavior for a few hundred hours more. Nice to have cans that can be worn for hours every day for weeks on end. (A Corda Crossfeed circuit makes headphone listening so much easier.)

When I plug my Sennheiser HD-600 into the weak-assed AudioEngine D1 USB powered DAC, they sound pretty dull.
OTOH, that same output when driving the BeyerDynamic DT 770 Pro 32 Ohm cans sounds dynamic and alive.
This has very little to do with impedance matching, and more to do with how much voltage you can source from USB (not very much, maybe 2V).
on both the USB Powered headphone/DAC and the low powered iPhone.
In comparison to the 300 Ohm Sennheiser HD-600, which needs a lot more drive to sound good.

just great out of the box. Also the cable is a Cardas. There is plenty of volume, the digital out of the McIntosh into the Yulong and out of it's headphone amp and socket sounds better than using the McI headphone socket. However they both do sound good...now I just need them (cables & phones) to break in for 150 hours or so. Thanks for the responses.

See if you can find a SinglePower (SP) MPX3 model. SP is no longer in business for good reason; however, having read extensively about SP and having owned one of these models, I have not seen much cause for alarm. It is an OTL amp that uses the 6SN7 (all models) for the two output tubes and can run many different input tubes, both octal and small pins, some with adapters. Some models of the MPX3 (Slam, I believe, was the designation) also allow using 5687/7119 as output tubes. Your headphones sounded fabulous with this amp.
Due to SP's terrible reputation, they are quite inexpensive if you can find them in the used market. Some (not all) versions of the MPX3 had safety problems that are easily fixed; the only other defect I know about was undersized power transformers (in 1 case), which is also easily remedied by a replacement Hammond. I fixed my safety problems and never had an issue with the PT since it was over-sized to begin with.
This is already more than you want to know.

Should work fine as far as high impedance. I would find out which tube most affects the sound before spending the kind of money he wants for tube upgrades (which can be had for less, elsewhere anyway).

I find those 2 upgraded tubes at a better price? I know zip about tubes BTW.
The driver tube(s) are very common and the quality of vintage tubes sold as NOS is all over the place. The 7308 tube is pretty-very costly, and may not be worth it. Wait until you burn the amp in.
I am not familiar with the power tube. I'll look around and get back to you. I don't have my address file handy at the moment. Still, I would wait to get the amp burned in before i did any tube rolling.

Leaning toward the tubed device.
Jack Woo builds wonderful amps. I've had a WA6 now for about two years. I can't imagine selling it. When you look at the unit, then, listen to it, you know what pride of ownership really means.
