Was it the Giants that had a Trumpeter play the Anthem at their Wild Card game? I liked that departure from the non-sensical wailing of singers the past 20 years.
Even better in some ways, but only in some was the playing of Mike Phillips for the Seahawks, then Packers yesterday. Not sure Saxophone wailing is an improvement on ersatz Gospel or Country Anthem wailing but there was certainly drama in the looong notes Phillips held with circular breathing.
A very difficult technique every advanced teen player tries to master but few, certainly not I, are able to do.
Can we please go back to just the notes Stafford Smith wrote?

I'm not an American but I do enjoy hearing yours sung with gusto by a big crowd. It's the singing of yours and ours as if they were pop-songs. Disrespectfully individuated, boring, and not at all affecting.
It's an anthem folks, so let's sing it like an anthem, with everyone JOINING IN, like we should.
Warmest

Silly bs IMO. What does an NFL game or any other sporting event have to do with patriotism? Are we gonna have the national anthem played before symphonic concerts, B'way shows, jazz concerts, r&r concerts, sitcom episodes or any/all other forms of entertainment to demonstrate the participants' patriotism?
Save it for when its really appropriate and meaningful.
Yes!
It was played because folks constantly had patriotism on their mind. It started with baseball and propagated to other sports. There are worse things.
There are worse things than having a boom box as your music source too. Guess we should shut down AA.
"Are we gonna have the national anthem played before symphonic concerts.... to demonstrate the participants' patriotism?"
The Cedar Rapids Symphony and New Mexico Philharmonic both play the Star Spangled Banner prior to opening a classical concert.......

Perhaps because, at least until fairly recently, the NFL got away with being a non-profit (tax exempt) organization.
You're welcome to google the facts yourself. NFL WAS a tax-exempt entity until 2015. Other leagues or sports may have a current "deal" with Uncle Sugar.
Me? I don't watch or follow any professional sports. OK... I'll admit - I don't watch or follow ANY sports, other than when I manage to stumble upon the 24 Hours of LeMans - which is rare. Paris-Dakar doesn't really exist anymore, and I've not seen an Australian Rules football match televised in a decade or more, so? Pretty much no sports for me.
"Can we please go back to just the notes Stafford Smith wrote? "
Amen.
Ever since that really good female singer did the 'fourth' jump during the word "free" about 15 years ago (Sandy Smith?), it seems that they all have to do it. At this Inauguration singing of the national anthem, the woman singer was great, excellent, and I said to myself "please don't do it". She held the note for a while, and then did the fourth. "Damn!" I said, not in a good way.
A few top trumpet players who have performed the Star Spangled Banner at major football games in the past are Arturo Sandoval, Maynard Ferguson, and Al Hirt. I don't know, but I would guess that Doc Severinsen also has.
:)
The worst rendering of the anthem I've heard since the infamous Roseanne debacle of years past.
Well, I missed it at the Georgia Dome. I came in when the score was 8 billion to 0. ;)
Who performed it, and can you point me to a clip?
:)
Sax player named Wayne Phillips, I believe. Like so many do nowadays, he totally disrespected the piece in a feeble attempt to make it all about himself.
Our national anthem deserves respect. It should be performed as it is written. Extraordinary talent can be shown off elsewhere.
Yeah.
Although, I'll add that it doesn't even take extraordinary talent to do that - it's a pretty simple harmonic jump, unlike, say, an augmented fifth. It just has to be in a key which is in the singer's range. Beyond that, it's easy-peasy.
Extraordinary talent, or lack of, is shown with the entirety of the performance.
:)
I've been practicing circular breathing and it ain't easy! However, lately it's been made easier with some really good instructional videos on youtube. I'm starting to get the hang of it. Just need a few more hours practice.
