Nice to see the bigger acts growing tired of the processing. No doubt Lady Gaga's big influences here were Tony Bennett and her best bud Elton John. The old school recordings seem to be making small inroads to the rather fake sounding digital over hyper perfection. Which is okay in certain kinds of songs - but not so in others."These musicians want their albums to sound like those made by Led Zeppelin, Sam Cooke, and Bruce Springsteen-not Justin Bieber."

Consideration needs to aimed at the mixing board as well. Sound quality went to hell in the late 1970s and 80s with the advent of the modern mixing board.
Is there a company that still makes a Reel to Reel deck?
Studer/Revox announced a new deck a few months back, but no specs or date yet.WW

I was going to say that Studer/Revox has the market for RTR decks.
Actually, there isn't a Studer/Revox anymore.
These days, Revox is a name brand of Joy.
:)
It's going to require wealthier artists I presume since it also will take up much more studio time. Time is money.
I get a sense that it was being introduced to the older acts and therefore older recording engineers with Tony Bennett and Elton John that may open the ears of some newer artists. Granted this doesn't necessarily speak to the music - you either like it or you don't and R2R probably has no influence over that. Personally, I'd far rather Miss Gaga sing the type of songs she sung at the 2015 Oscars because IMO her talent is wasted on boom boom poppity pop pop music which is by and large poopity poop poop.

First two restore decks...last one I believe will be newly manufactured.

different processing.
Now, John Mellencamp did record an album straight to an Ampex 600 a few years back -- I am guessing Ms Germanotta's latest is more traditionally multitracked, compressed, EQd, and otherwise 'processed' -- albeit in the analog domain.
I am NOT knocking her or this album (of which I am hearing good things, including that it sounds good!) -- but, just like the Beatles in their "Get Back" sessions, the temptation to wield studio tricks sometimes proves to be just too great.
all the best,
