It sure seems it to me, and I'll contend that music lovers, in general, are also audiophiles to some degree. At first, I was a music lover first and foremost, but the poor sound from my Maggies 1.6s forced me to become an audiophile and I upgraded the capacitors so that my music would sound great. After getting the sound I was after, I stopped being an audiophile and began on my way again to being a classical music lover.
But now I see that the prices of my classical CDs have dwindled considerably over the past several years and I take this to infer that fewer and fewer people are getting into classical.

CDs are cheap because of downloads--no middle men, no physical media expense, no brick and mortar rent, etc.
The download sites are teaming with young artists. I was gratified to see that. There are at least 5 versions of Ligeti's Violin Concerto available.
The industry today has to be doing pretty well when you've got 5 versions of such supposedly "thorny" music from which to choose!
The American media treats classical music as if it doesn't even exist. Aside from Gustavo Dudamel (and to a lesser degree, Lang Lang and Yuja Wang), hardly any classical performer has been aired in the American mainstream.
Now if you go to Japan, it's like the American media back in the 1950s and 1960s..... The classical music audience there is massive, and doesn't favor a specific age group. And Tokyo's NHK Symphony is arguably the best symphony orchestra on the planet.
Take the opportunity to buy once precious LP's on CD's generally at less than $2.00per disc. Great collections from Decca DGG Archive, EMI etc. Makes up what I spent when CD's were generally two to three times the price of LP's.... It is amazing what has been reissue and what we get second chance for.
Unfortunately serviceable audiophile equipment is in the ridiculous range with profit margins many 100's of %. Fortunately there is Magnepan and a few other outfits that still offer a satisfactory middle ground.
