Not all were created equally. Once feeling the weighted tuning knob on the RX-7000 this becomes clear.

... but the few "good" ones were rare as hen's teeth.
My first real "stereo" was a medium-sized Sony boombox. It had good tone for a boombox (or so I thought), and so got me interested in listening to the real and better stuff later on in life. I suspect that many of us started out with table radios of one sort or another.
I suspect that boomboxes like the upscale RX-7000 were not "ghetto blasters". Probably used in sporting boats and fancy vacation cabins? So it's nice to hear that you're into the collectibles.
BTW, what did the RX-7000 cost back in the day?
Didn't purchase it new, and as its Panasonic's Asian branch I'm not sure if it ever sold here. But from the info I've been able to obtain it was anywhere from $495 - $849, and pristine units now sell for $$$$$$$$. Mine is not pristine, needed a bit of work, but is fully functional now. The picture I posted was from the internet, not mine. It has inputs on the back for phono, aux, and a line out for a power amp, it's not your typical boom box, and why I'm reluctant to use it as a job site radio lol, hence my recent purchase of its smaller sibling, the RX-5080.Martin
