U.S. Army Special Ops, in Afghanistan. My wife's nephew, and a great guy.
Follow Ups:
Matt's military funeral was yesterday. Back in '69 - '70, I played Taps at several funerals for guys who had been killed in Vietnam. Today, I went outside to play it for Matt. Got about halfway through it. I'll try again tomorrow.Ya know what's weird, Matt was only the second U.S. military fatality in Afghanistan this year. Who'da ever thunk that he'd be the one. Not me. Someone near him stepped on an IED. As I've said before, what the hell is wrong with those people?
Didn't make the "news" - the weather was more important.

Sorry for your great loss.
Be well, friend.
"Thank you" to all who have replied.
And, thank you to all who have thought about replying.
I've known Matt since he was a baby.
He was a great kid. Never in trouble. Loving son.
Damn shame that he's dead for no good reason.
So sorry for the loss. My condolences & prayers for the friends & family. We also experienced the loss of some dear friend's son to the war in Afghanistan. Growing up, he was a regular fixture around our house, us having 4 daughters around his age probably played a big part in that. His dream was to become a Marine & serve his country. He did just that, and was killed on his 1st damn mission. Being a disabled combat vet from V.N., my heart ached when I learned he was going to Afgh., but proud that he had accomplished his goal. When we learned of his death, it was 1970 all over again & I again went through all those mixed emotions of losing friends & reconciling my feelings of patriotism against thoughts of "how many times do we have to do this?". My heart aches for all those friends, families & fellow warriors who have given all. Sorry if this went too long or for those who think I threw myself into the mix unnecessarily, but I do find it almost therapeutic to vent my feelings on these painful notices of loss. My apologies if I am out of line.
Everyone thinks I'm strange except my friends deep inside the earth
Sorry to hear it. Condolences to your family.

Dang it. Sorry to hear that. Wonder if there will ever be a time when there is no conflicts in the Middle East? Prolly never.

My thoughts and prayers to the family. RIP.
Any chance he'll be buried at Arlington? Section 60? I cry every time I visit.

I'm really sorry to hear that Dave. Condolences to you and your family. It's especially hard when someone so young dies.
News like this always breaks my heart....each and every time.
it's a throwback to the viet nam era only WORSE. these kids are now retuning repeatedly to war zones whereas in the viet nam war era, you were only liable for one twelve month tour and that's all. voluntary return was optional.
bring back the draft. there won't be so many whiners, there will be people who know how to make life work because they know the right way to do so.
my condolences.
...regards...tr
