Actually, instead of an update you might have to do a restore and shut off automatic updates. I have fixed a few PCs by doing a "Driver Rollback". That is after a automatic update goes bad or was corrupt or written poorly or even was counterfeit.
Tellya a little story. First of all my software is old and I do not allow automatic updates except to the AV program. My shit runs fine. When there is an embedded video in a site like this I get the usual from Firefox "This plugin is vulnerable and should be updated. But I don't because of a little thing that happened a few years ago. I just click on it to enable the plugin.
It nags me to update Java at every bootup, which is maybe once every two months or so. A while back it started nagging me like every ten seconds.
Well I found a virus in it that apparently could not run in my old version of Java. So how the hell is that less vulnerable ? Every time they plug a hole they open up two more, but then that keeps them in a job. At this point, I won't update my Flash either, which you might need if it is not playing videos. (or a rollback)
Newer browsers do not work.
Seriously, I would try doing a system restore back to the last known date it worked. And then turn off automatic updates except for your anti-virus.
I am running Firefox 18.0 in Vista and it runs everything it is called upon to, and has an outdated Flash Player. You just click on the grey area and it runs. I have to do the same for PDF files if I want to just view them now and not download them. The vids do not skip or lock up or any of that, they play perfectly. This is a cheap PC ans only has 2 gigs of RAM. Dual core, two point something Ghz. Eight years old and running great. NEVER a Windows update.
If you have Windows 7 or higher I cannot tell you how to do a system restore. When my shit stops working it is Linux time. I'd like to have 98 back. Every "upgrade" took away some things I used to be able to do. And I think people who got this Win 10 now are going to be greeted sometime next year with a screen that says "Click here to renew your subscription to Windows 10". And then of course put in your credit card number. You know there is nothing illegal about that in the US.
And subscription is the word, like being drafted into the army. If they can force you to pay a dollar they can force you to pay a hundred.

Yep, for many years auto updates off! Great post. My other tactics include Open DNS, proxy server, Firefox set to delete all cookies upon closing and to not accept third party cookies.
No need for shitty anti-virus software to slow down your PC when you know how to use the Internet. Use Defender and some other cleaner like Anti Malware bytes or the ones from Wise.
I've never had a virus.
