The past two days all I get is a black screen with partial, incomplete text. Even a video I posted a few
days ago which initially played fine. Now, black screen.
My ancient computer, AA interface, or the McClure quote below moving into the present?

Me as well.
I can't say if it's Youtube not supporting the old flash format or if my browser got updated and decided it didn't want to show them. Niether IE or Chrome seem to work anymore.

Did you change anything here?
You really need to figure out how to do iframes, because the object embedding was deprecated more than a year and a half ago and will eventually go away.
No, I didn't change a thing. I suspect it is and was a Youtube issue with flash files because they're going all HTML5. Though my Chrome browser got updated about the same time this happened and idiots at Google took away the backspace for returning to the previous page or I wouldn't have noticed the change.
iframes are nasty because anyone can stick in any malicious code into one. We already don't allow iframes, so I have to strip that call out and then parse it which gets complicated. The safer solution is to add a Youtube Link URL and then just add embed to the post. Allowing more than one video in a post then gets more complicated and probably not worth the effort.
-Rod
See my comments in Support & Feedback. You need to allow users to simply post the URL of the YouTube page, then render it as the YouTube iframe. YOU put the iframe code onto the page. You can still disallow iframes.
Whether your static pages will make that a challenge is anyone's guess. You might need to go back and forth when allowing editing. I don't know how you do that, but I wouldn't wish such a system on my worst enemy.
Auto updates bad!

not working with Chrome.
.
Possibly. HTML5 is not the issue really, Youtube does that automatically via their current embed code using the iframe tag which allows them to put basically any code they want in the iframe section. Our issue is that allowing iframe tags would be an obvious security issue as anyone could put any code in that section.
I'm thinking that the easiest and most effective method might be to add an input for an Optional Youtube Link and then I could reformat that link to replicate their embed code.

Why didn't you include a few specific links to click on, that you've had trouble with? Then others could try them out and get back to you.
at the link.

Actually, instead of an update you might have to do a restore and shut off automatic updates. I have fixed a few PCs by doing a "Driver Rollback". That is after a automatic update goes bad or was corrupt or written poorly or even was counterfeit.
Tellya a little story. First of all my software is old and I do not allow automatic updates except to the AV program. My shit runs fine. When there is an embedded video in a site like this I get the usual from Firefox "This plugin is vulnerable and should be updated. But I don't because of a little thing that happened a few years ago. I just click on it to enable the plugin.
It nags me to update Java at every bootup, which is maybe once every two months or so. A while back it started nagging me like every ten seconds.
Well I found a virus in it that apparently could not run in my old version of Java. So how the hell is that less vulnerable ? Every time they plug a hole they open up two more, but then that keeps them in a job. At this point, I won't update my Flash either, which you might need if it is not playing videos. (or a rollback)
Newer browsers do not work.
Seriously, I would try doing a system restore back to the last known date it worked. And then turn off automatic updates except for your anti-virus.
I am running Firefox 18.0 in Vista and it runs everything it is called upon to, and has an outdated Flash Player. You just click on the grey area and it runs. I have to do the same for PDF files if I want to just view them now and not download them. The vids do not skip or lock up or any of that, they play perfectly. This is a cheap PC ans only has 2 gigs of RAM. Dual core, two point something Ghz. Eight years old and running great. NEVER a Windows update.
If you have Windows 7 or higher I cannot tell you how to do a system restore. When my shit stops working it is Linux time. I'd like to have 98 back. Every "upgrade" took away some things I used to be able to do. And I think people who got this Win 10 now are going to be greeted sometime next year with a screen that says "Click here to renew your subscription to Windows 10". And then of course put in your credit card number. You know there is nothing illegal about that in the US.
And subscription is the word, like being drafted into the army. If they can force you to pay a dollar they can force you to pay a hundred.
or not.

Yep, for many years auto updates off! Great post. My other tactics include Open DNS, proxy server, Firefox set to delete all cookies upon closing and to not accept third party cookies.
No need for shitty anti-virus software to slow down your PC when you know how to use the Internet. Use Defender and some other cleaner like Anti Malware bytes or the ones from Wise.
I've never had a virus.

I shut off Java once and have the same issue. Some vids and even pictures just will not work.
It has to do with 'permissions' built into software and computer code.
Try updating Java and other video code.
Even with an ancient computer you should have a screen to ask for updates on software.
