They are always crazy late on deliveries. 5:00pm is EARLY.
It's six o'clock and my shipment has been out for delivery for ELEVEN HOURS and still not here.
Fedex usually gets packages to my house by noon.
This is so frustrating.

Usually around 8:00 pm when I know I will be at home to accept the package personally rather than it sitting on my doorstep all day.
If I won't be home I'll have it delivered to work depending on value or heat for LPs.

Huh...you should see what UPS is like cross-boarder. They have this BS "brokerage" fee that's almost as high as the item price for packages under $200. I bought some drivers from parts express for $70, plus $24 shipping.
I accidentally chose UPS delivery.
When it came, they wanted another $52.
I refused the package at that price, but parts express wouldn't pay for the return shipping, so I had to re-route the package back to me and pay the $52.
So a pair of $70 midranges cost me $177 canadian.
I've never understood why UPS is the only one that does this. USPS seems to work seamlessly with Canada Post with no extra fees in most cases.
I should mention Fedex has a brokerage fee too, but way more reasonable.
Pick a carrier ...any carrier ...you will hear praise and horror stories.
They all suck sometimes ...and most times they don't.

Via certain routes or regions UPS might be just fine, while other routes or regions seem to induce risk.It's all about the people. In certain places, employees tend not to care about the fate of someone else's package.
I always ask the seller about his/her experiences with various shipping carriers and I'll usually go along with their advice, even if doing so costs me a bit more.
One thing though: Last time I checked, UPS shipping rates seemed to be a bit higher than Fedex or USPS rates. I don't know if that has changed any.

I wasn't home for a delivery that needed a signature and he swung around to try again at the end of his shift. Saved me a day and a trip to the distribution center.

Frankly they have always been very good. If delivery times are critical, you should be paying for next-day morning delivery, which is expensive, but gets it to you by noon.
Just to compare, FedEx Ground has often dropped stuff off at 6, 7 and even after that.

... with EITHER UPS or FedEx. And my wife and I get deliveries from both of them every week, and for years. Obviously I must count my blessings. Or something.
I think a lot has to do with how the local terminal is managed. My experience with FedEx (in 4 different states and 5 cities) has varied from good to great. With UPS, it's been from bad to really bad.
I stop by the FedEx counter here in Charlotte, NC frequently to drop off packages that weren't ready in time for our daily pickup. On more than one occasion, a counter person has even come out to the car and help carry stuff in. Always polite, always professional, and always make it a point to express their appreciation for your business. Probably above the norm, but impressive just the same. I've had to drop stuff off at UPS too (charged to customer account), and even getting a "Hello" would be a surprise. Seems they all hate their job, and make it a point to be sure you know it.
You can have the package held for pickup at your convenience if you live in a city large enough to have a place to pick-up. UPS stores & Staples come to mind. Same holds true for FedEx at Kinko's. If not, you can have it delivered to a neighbor.
UPS typically delivers to businesses during working hours and residential after working hours. It all depends on the coverage area & size of the city you live in.
You can do the same "Call and Hold for pickup" routine with Fedex. I live on a mountain yet there are three Fedex stations for ground, freight, and normal shipping within 7 miles of Afton, VA.
The big advantage in this method comes from the fact you can inspect the package for damage in the presence of the shipper's personnel, so there's no question if things aren't right. I have even opened up a package in their presence to see if the item (a receiver) was okay. It was, and everyone was satisfied. I think being able to inspect the package in front of the shipper is worth a drive.

I could go on for hours about my overwhelmingly negative experiences with UPS both at home and at work. We switched to FedEx at work several years ago which has proven to be a very good decision, and at home, if UPS is the only shipping option when I'm buying something I'll find someplace else to buy it.
FedEx isn't perfect, but I've never had to deal with that stinking attitude from anyone at FedEx. It apparently has to be encoded in your DNA to work at UPS. And that's just the small package division. Multiply it a few hundred times and you'll get an idea of what dealing with the personnel in their freight division is like.

Same deal at my house. By 6 or 7pm, the day is pretty much over. May as well deliver it the next morning.
sorry to butt in again, I usually take off from work when I get something delivered, as a vacation day.I completely understand the situation it really sucks, but in these days when some people walk out their door and don't find the paper waiting there for them they go batshit, that is expected.
I work in Manhattan, I can't take my $4 out of my wallet quick enough to pay for my coffee in the morning, it is an illness, we all throw hissy fits when things don't go smooth nowadays. It is an illness or some sort of problem with us. I don't just mean audiophiles, I mean society in general, instant gratification syndrome.

every time I got 6 grand up in the air at the mercy of UPS I feel pretty stressed, my guy UPS is cool though, I always tip $20, you'll be surprised how much that helps the delivery person's constitution. They'll remember your house for next time you freak out.
Tipping someone to do there job, just grates on my nerves. I have worked hard all my life and never expect a tip. our ups driver is awesome he even gave us his cell number in case we are not ready for him to pick up,then he will swing by later,plus he always shakes my hand after I sign.
Or is that just big city etiquette? Am I a rube for not tipping the UPS guy?
Tipping the UPS guy won't help.
That box has been handled by many people before it ever gets to the guy that delivers it to your door.
The damage has already been done before your driver gets it.

they do well most of them, stock options and damn good salary as well.
I see my UPS guy in the sandwich shop ordering ham and egg on a roll like me, we say whassup to each other. For a few years I kept him really busy.
Remember they are people too, not your slaves :)
For stuff from dealers, I accept the shipper they use. They are on the hook.
For private purchases which cost a lot, I pay the big buck to have it sent to me FedEx Air.
Stuff I sell, up to the buyer.
