Hello,
Recently I had the low/high gain switch completely removed form my SUT and had it direct wired for the low gain 1:20.
It made such a huge improvement to my system.
Can I have the same modification on my preamp which also has high/low gain switch? What differences would I expect if any?
Thank you so much for your comments.

This makes it easier for the cartridge to drive.
Removing a switch contact is unlikely to have as big an effect as making the generator's job easier.

I am not surprised by the improvement in bypassing the switch. I noticed something similar with my SUT when I went from hardwired output cables to RCA output jacks. Even though the jacks were decent quality (WBT NextGen) and already broken in, there was such a drop in sound quality that I quickly went back to the hardwired setup.
I also noticed an improvement in sound quality with my linestage when I converted it to a dedicated single-input. No switches in the signal path whatsoever. Obviously not for everybody since changing inputs means moving cables around, but I listen almost exclusively to vinyl so for me there is no hassle at all.
Hi Heifetz,
The SUT handles very low level signals, so I think you'll hear more of a difference there by going direct hardwired, IMO.. If you must use a switch (in a preamp) that an audio signal directly passes through, at least use a very high quality one. Maybe something with silver contacts for example.. I hope that helps.
Regards....
This falls into less is more. Less switch contacts is better. I would expect an improvement from removing the second switch too.

Thank you Par !

This is just to suggest that it would help inmates answer your question if you provided the identity of the pre-amp. You may also find that you would get a better answer to this if you posted it on the amp/pre-amp forum (remember the rules about double posting though).
