The back panel sits in a very deep groove and cannot be removed no matter how much I shift it or pull on it. No obvious movable adjoining sections either. I can't imagine final assembly taking place after everything inside was hooked up. If you have any ideas let me know before I get the crowbar out. Thanks.

all the components slide to the left.

Most cabinets were like that in the old days. The shelves usually slid out or you had to take the glass door off or both. That in combination with pulling out each component from the front just enough to reach behind to unhook the cables.

Make sure the back panel does not provide important structural integrity, since it won't be a good thing if the stereo cabinet becomes wobbly...
Use a dremel and cut it out. It's not needed and blocks airflow.

Seriously, I'd cut 4"x12" holes at a minimum on the top and bottom to get some air flow through the cabinet and to be able to fish cables around. If the shelves don't have large holes for running cables between components, then I might consider cutting holes behind each shelf.

Use the crowbar and put it out of it's misery, please!
