My tinnitus is basically gone. I may experience it one day a week, lightly. I was stuck with it 5-6 days a week, often intensely to the point I would turn off the music, or talk radio.
I've finally managed to find a ways to rid myself of it. Music sounds soooooo much better now, and I can turn it WAY up.
My take on the causes and possible fixes:
Medications I'm on and have reduced significantly
Managing the duration and/or loudness of noises for 20-30 minute period after awakening: water running (shower), heater, shower fan, riding in a car, loud music.
I had this shit for the past eight years!!!

Follow Ups:
I suffered from tinnitus for as long as I could remember. Early Sept 2014 I was afflicted with meniere's disease with debilitating episodes occurring like clock work every five days. One day after drinking coffee I had an episode. After recovering I decided to forgo coffee for one week. During those seven days I did not have an episode. Since then I have not had tinnitus nor an episode of meniere's. I sure miss my coffee.
Best to you,

I've also removed coffee from my daily routine. I drank 1/2 a cup (fresh ground strong shit!) in the a.m. and that was it. I don't think it had anything to do with my tinnitus, but you never know.
I forgot to get coffee one week when shopping, and the next week I decided I did not miss it so I did not buy any at that time.
Now its liquid yogurt or juice in the a.m.

Wouldn't go away until somebody told me to give up coffee. Then, it went away within a week. I now drink a cup of coffee in the morning only and I am OK. But, if I drink another cup of coffee in the afternoon, the wrist AND arm pain will return. It appears to be some nerve inflammatory process that coffee triggers. I wouldn't be surprised that many cases of tennis elbow, for instance, is caused OR aggravated by the same thing and I think a lot of doctor bills and unnecessary medications could be avoided if this was more widely recognized.
Thanks for sharing your story about tinnitus.

In the late forties I had German measles which nearly killed me. Lived in the bath tub with blocks of ice from the ice house. Wound up with nearsightedness and (I believe) tinnitus. Had a moderate case ever since. I avoid loud noises which are physically painful. Rock concerts are out of the question. My treble is zilch by 9K. Otherwise sounds nowadays( at 77) have to be a bit louder than years ago. People ask why I have invested in such a good stereo system since my hearing isnt very good and I tell them that's why- so I can control the sound. Turns out that in a quiet room I seem to hear what they tell me I cant.

I have suffered from Tinnitus for 20 years and I have found it to be somewhat related to my chronic back, neck-aches and headaches. If I keep up with my exercises, stretches, physical therapy and chiropractic visits it is lessened and occasionally it is almost not noticed. Progressive relaxation tends to help as well. When I am asymptomatic from it my system sounds awesome, if it is really loud then not so much :-(

I only WISH I'd had it for 8 years. But I'm glad to hear yours is doing better.

I have had continuous tinnitus for about 50 years. It's never been terribly severe but it is relentless; it might be a bit worse than it was a decade ago.I know I'll die with tinnitus ringing in my ears; I just have to suck it up.
I love the music of Dmitri Shostakovich ...

Thats great. You can get a list of ototoxic meds from the ATA on request. Things like Aspirin as well as caffeine can caus it as well. Noise protection for noise like lawn mowers, leaf blowers and riding a motorcycle even with a full face helmet are critical too.

I've had mild tinnitus for a long time. Probably due to not using earplugs for the first 5 years or so I rode motorcycles. I have found a few things that make it worse, particularly earwax buildup, alcohol, NSAIDs especially Aspirin, and listening to loud music. When my ears are clean and in the absence of any other contributing factors, it's so low level that I don't notice it. I do have to clean my ears every couple months.
