Not so. I have been using one for 20 years. Everyone comments how comfortable it sits.
I used to have an original Stickley Brothers chair with a seat cushion. My wife didn't care for it and used to call it the "Electric Chair".
Shaker furniture is a bit different, made more for utility than comfort.
