Has anyone ever heard of any stories where long time or famous audio reviewers were blown away by a relatively unknown audiophile's audio system?
Follow Ups:
I tried a number of times to get one well-known reviewer friend to listen to my setup, even offered to bring bits of my gear by to his place for him to hear, since I thought my setup was lightyears better than the various setups I heard him with (and which he waxed very poetic about). No interest, he said he wasn't interested in anything that wouldn't make for a good review (commercial products, with dealers, etc). I suppose after listening to so much stuff, the chance to hear something new and different loses its glamour.

How about a story of a reviewer being blown away by a set of speakers he had been testing for quite a while.
I was at Harry Pearson's with george Bischoff, a partner in Scaena Speakers. Harry put on a favorite bass CD, the soundtrack from The Lost World, a cut called Volcano with a 'real' in the mix that Harry saoid went below 20 Hz with real power. The floor was shaking, etc. As usual Harry cranked it up and I looked at his eyes(and george's too) and they were bulging. It was obvious that fly woofers were expected any minute. Nothing happened except HP was truly impressed.
A bit later George used the bath room next to the listening room. He came out and told HP that a cup had fallen off the shelf and shattered. HP told us it was his favorite cup. And there was a huge grin on his face.
The only story I know of was the opposite scenario.... Someone visited my place, and after listening to my main system, he invited me to his house to listen to his "Bose system"........ (I never visited his place. We lost touch about 10 years ago.)
He calmly said, "What's that smell?" then quickly faded away into the mist.Anyone here have any idea about the meaning of this dream?

Perhaps HP noticed the copy of TAS you had on your night stand.

... is a rather unsettling one:
The dream does indeed seem to represent HP being "blown away by an unknown audiophile's audio system".
The unsettling aspect? HP has not chosen to be perfectly clear as to WHY he was so blown away...
I dont get it, his favorite cup was broken, he was impressed , reason enuff?
BTW: I may get the chance to hear the Scanea myself, I will carry my favorite cup and see.
:)
Well played ....

He made a request to listen to the Lynyrd Skynyrd tune...........
When HP heard the Sound Lab U-1 setup in my previous house about ten years ago, his comment was "these are going to cost you a lot". He was right! He appreciated their potential, but the rest of my system was not entirely up to snuff. I have since upgraded many aspects of the system and added more room treatments to better leverage their capabilities. I wish he could hear the system today. :(
One thing I never convinced him of was the beauty of server based music. Last time I was in Sea Cliff, Mike Hobson came by and brought one of his HRT USB based DACs (along with some one off vinyl!) and tried to do same.
Ask me sometime about a review HP was doing of a pair of Sound Labs, I think Pristines, when Arnie Nudell showed up. The rave review that never happened. Heard about the 'event' from someone who witnessed it.

So much music, so little time!
Yeah ask me about my Arnie Nudell stories , seems like common play ....

Don't tease us Brian...
Arnie a nemesis or not a fan of your speakers? Sounds like some bad timing.
Not that, but I can't say more here.

...back when I was reviewing audio equipment I didn't have much time to hear other audiophile's systems. But I had a neighbor down the street who heard I was an audiophile and invited me over to hear his system.
It was Wilson MAXX speakers driven by big top of the line Krell mono amps and electronics in his dedicated upstairs bedroom/listening room.
CDs sounded impressive and dynamic but a little too etched for my taste.
What impressed me the most were a few LPs he played on his VPI turntable with a Van den Hul Grasshopper cartridge - very musical and relaxed with a big image that hung in the air.

Wow, what a neighborhood.

...I asked him how he got those big heavy speakers up his stairs.
He said he had help.
Hmm, a neighbor willing to sacrifice his back to help an audiophile carry heavy stuff upstairs. Where do you live mk?
Best Wishes
Bill
Not me. He got them up before I met him.
I'm in the East SF Bay Area.
Well, Phil Collins lives down the street, but musicians are the worst audiophiles... plus he never answers his door. Or responds to my notes...or letters or that sweet sweet effigy I made.
Great query- hope we get some nice responses.
Did not know that they went out of their circles-
Happy Listening
