Two big questions for boat systems:
1: Fresh or Salt water- if salt - plan on replacing it every 5 years or so - unless it is hermetically sealed- galvanic corrosion, and that salt laden moisture with electricity....
2: power or sail - sail has less battery reserves and different grounding schema - powerboats are a bit simpler in that regard....

Whoa! Surely sailboats don't use a positive ground. The only positive ground system I've ever seen or worked on were some old 60s version White trucks. If not a positive ground, what type of grounding makes them different? Just curious. Thanks
Typically in power boats - the motor acts as ground- with a large mass, and directly connected to the water-
Sailboats - with the tall mast - often have ground planes built into the hull- not relying on the contact w/ the water for ground...
these 'planes' could be as simple as a series of bronze straps that cris-cross the hull between planking, or a screen laid between layers of composite/glass-
Some do rely upon the engine - but not all-

That's right. Most displacement hull sailboats will use the lead keel as the ground, but the system you describe is much better. One thing's for sure, if your boat gets struck by lightning, then the electricity WILL find it's way to ground. Even if it means blowing out the bottom of your hull!
On the West Coast you may not have to worry so much, but it North Florida it's the freaking lightning strike capital of the world.
FWIW, I'm going to put a boat system together for my catamaran this year. It will probably be a used JBL EON PA speaker with a 12" bass driver. Just one, so mono. I'll probably use a personal digital player like a Fiio, or Pono player. The amp I haven't decided on yet, but probably class D, or AB. The cool thing about the Pono player is it's hi res, and it uses SD cards, so you could have a huge hi res library with you on the water.

Big speakers and little amps blew my mind!
