Not at all. The maple surface above the Simple SE (black case) just gets warm and of course the 45 tubes give off very little heat.
Both are mostly just parked there though, even the 45 which was my reference for many years, because I recently completed these amps I wish to be buried with, and never miss an opportunity to show off!
1950-ish Mullard 5-20 circuit designed to launch the then new EL-34 updated at Diyaudio.com to 55 Watts per channel with GL KT-88s, EF86 run in triode, K&K CCS, a little Steve Brown magic, and no NFB. Like no push-pull you ever heard.
Beautiful amps Kitch.
I believe you on the sound. A friend has SET mono-blocks and a beautiful large room with killer modified K horns with TAD drivers and custom wooden horns and it is just an amazing sounding system. I came home after a visit and my push pulls seemed broken. I had to send them to the Backert boys for some tutoring and to freshen them up.
If I had the room and space I would have a SET setup.
I agree with the poster above. Just google hardwood stores near you. They really are everywhere. I build wood furniture for fun and it's great hobby. They will mill the maple to whatever size you want and for a bit extra they'll even rip and and chop saw to near size you need. I'd recommend starting with 8/4 (air dried if they have it) maple or thicker. That will give you a shelf that will be 1 3/4" or so. If you are able to, I'd cut dado's in the legs to get support. I don't know what you have for shop tools, but it's really cheap to get a Japanese saw, a sharp chisel and make your own joinery by hand. Lot's of great articles online if you Google. Most will have plans too. Keep us posted and share pics.
