Please if you want to mention good older music please do not include The Eagles. Along with the Grateful Dead one of the worst "serious" bands of the last 50 years. Just my opinion.
Follow Ups:
I, and the other posters only mentioned The Eagles in the context of Glen Freys' death.
I could have mentioned some critically acclaimed "nobody" like Elvis Costello instead, but then most everyone knows that the biggest thing he ever did was become Mr. Diana Krall.
I'm not a huge fan of Michael Jackson's, however, to deny his musical talent and brilliance as a entertainer when he was with the living would be preposterous.
Frey, Henley, Walsh, Meisner, Leadon, Felder, and Schmidt were all immensely talented musicians that put their stamp permanently on the latter quarter of 20th century pop culture.
If you can tell the story of rock/pop without including sombody or group, then they are the ones that didn't make it.
The story of pop/rock from the last quarter of the last century can NOT be told without The Eagles.
They call it pop because it's P-O-P-U-L-A-R........That means a lot of people like 'em.

Check out the posted link about The Eagles on Critics Corner. Not only did The Eagles not positively contribute but I think they did damage. History will not be kind.
I think that the early Elvis Costello albums are brilliant. I'll bet you that I have heard more Eagles than you have Elvis Costello. Oh and history will be very kind to Elvis Costello and The Attractions.
Popularity has nothing to do with quality but they are just usually mutually exclusive. The Eagles are like the Big Mac.
I would agree that you have probably heard more Eagles than I, or anyone else has heard Elvis Costello.
Everyone has heard more Eagles than Mr. Diana Krall - No surprise there. We've all heard Led Zeppelin more than Mike Oldfield also......
It's no surprise that narrow shouldered egg headed critics hate popular artists anymore than they hate the football player that went balls deep on the girl they had a crush on in high school.
Critics are of no use to wildly popular artists. Why??? Because the popular artists have made it, and do not require validation from anyone other than there millions of adoring fans (and the $$$$$$ that come with them).
Can the story of rock & roll be told without mentioning Elvis Costello? Yeah, I think so.
But hay; To each his own.

Partially true.. at one point at least.
Fair guess to say that the larger portion of their fan base has erm.. passed.. by now.
...but I'm feeling better!
