When I heard Procol Harum live in 1972, there was no opening act that I recalled.
On the other hand, in 1972 I also heard Yes open for... J. Geils.
And apparently (the concert was at the Brown ice rink), somebody got backstage and stole a guitar belonging to Yes.
Ouch.

Follow Ups:
...I don't get buying a ticket for the quintessential one hit wonder and Jukebox king Procul Harem or any of those 70's hair bands like Yes. They were all loud Gordon MacCraes with drummers.
And don't get me started on U-2, I'd rather listen to Murph and The Surftones.
...in 1972 I heard Yes open for the Allman Brothers.
...one of my first concerts was Jethro Tull, opening for Led Zepplin. Not a bad twin bill.
The universe is made of electrons, protons, neutrons, and morons.
. . . Pink Floyd were going to open for Moody Blues in Dallas, TX, but somebody stole their truck with all their gear. The Moodys were great, regardless, but Floyd didn't come back to town until '73 and the Dark Side tour. No opening act.
Those two on the same bill actually would have made sense, as a spacey prog show.
Anybody check Craigslist for all that stuff?

J. Geils.
Mostly from the bar I called home until AFTER their set.
Saw them headline a couple years later.
They were MUCH better!

U2's "Old Grey Whistle Test" appearance was... perhaps not a showing of what they would later become.
