Whether you consider them pablum for the mind or not; or if you don't like their mixing/recording techniques...the fact is many of us grew up with Glenn/Don/Randy/Don and the ever changing mix of the Eagles.
An amateur student of 16th century Italian art, I always wondered how all those geniuses (Da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Giambologna, etc) all gathered in one place in the same time period.
Similiarly, but to a different level of artistry, how did Glen Frey wind up with Jackson Browne as a roomate? With J.D. Souther down the hall, hanging out with Gram Parsons, and fronting for Linda Ronstadt; jamming with Tom Waits at the Troubadour Club then meeting Don Henley at the bar. All this talent, in one place, at one time.
I personally like much of their music, and have grown to appreciate Frey as a solo artist. To me, they were best with Don Felder in the group, before all the acrimonious mudslinging.
So today, I pour a North Coast Syrah, push a log in the woodstove, and dial the server to Frey's title cut on his Soul Searchin album (with the Waters Family singing background and the Muscle Shoals Section boosting the beat), and toast Glenn Frey's memorable contribution.

Does listening to Mojo Nixon qualify?
I had a marathon listening session yesterday. Pictured below is just a portion of what was heard.
The mind boggles at the level of talent, and it makes me sad for the kids today because of the shit that passes for music.
I was still trying to master putting my shoes on the right feet (I'm 47) when The Eagles started their journey, which puts me well into middle age. Having stated this, I love and appreciate artists such as Simon & Garfunkle, Buddy Holly, the Stones, The Who, Hendrix, The Doors, The Eagles, Jackson Browne, Led Zeppelin, BTO, and many many more that came into prominence before I came of age.
I don't think kids today give a rats ass about Phil Collins, Rush, Van Halen, Mellencamp etc, let alone any bands from the 60's and 70's.
My daughter plays a lot of music (being kind here), and the level of musicianship is appalling. Drum machines, autotune, compression, weird sound effects blah blah blah.........I'll get off my soap box now.
Back to the point of the original post. We lost a Musical Giant the other day, and yes I did spin a lot of that Southwest 70's sound in homage to Mr. Frey.
Go in peace Glen - Take it easy.......

I was born in 75 and I don't ever recall ever giving a rat's ass about bands from the 60s and 70s. Still don't. I'll give you Van Halen, but if it wasn't the Cubs theme song back in the mid-80's, I probably would not have listened to them either.

Cubs theme song??????
Must have slept in the day that one was popular.

Please if you want to mention good older music please do not include The Eagles. Along with the Grateful Dead one of the worst "serious" bands of the last 50 years. Just my opinion.
I, and the other posters only mentioned The Eagles in the context of Glen Freys' death.
I could have mentioned some critically acclaimed "nobody" like Elvis Costello instead, but then most everyone knows that the biggest thing he ever did was become Mr. Diana Krall.
I'm not a huge fan of Michael Jackson's, however, to deny his musical talent and brilliance as a entertainer when he was with the living would be preposterous.
Frey, Henley, Walsh, Meisner, Leadon, Felder, and Schmidt were all immensely talented musicians that put their stamp permanently on the latter quarter of 20th century pop culture.
If you can tell the story of rock/pop without including sombody or group, then they are the ones that didn't make it.
The story of pop/rock from the last quarter of the last century can NOT be told without The Eagles.
They call it pop because it's P-O-P-U-L-A-R........That means a lot of people like 'em.

Check out the posted link about The Eagles on Critics Corner. Not only did The Eagles not positively contribute but I think they did damage. History will not be kind.
I think that the early Elvis Costello albums are brilliant. I'll bet you that I have heard more Eagles than you have Elvis Costello. Oh and history will be very kind to Elvis Costello and The Attractions.
Popularity has nothing to do with quality but they are just usually mutually exclusive. The Eagles are like the Big Mac.
I would agree that you have probably heard more Eagles than I, or anyone else has heard Elvis Costello.
Everyone has heard more Eagles than Mr. Diana Krall - No surprise there. We've all heard Led Zeppelin more than Mike Oldfield also......
It's no surprise that narrow shouldered egg headed critics hate popular artists anymore than they hate the football player that went balls deep on the girl they had a crush on in high school.
Critics are of no use to wildly popular artists. Why??? Because the popular artists have made it, and do not require validation from anyone other than there millions of adoring fans (and the $$$$$$ that come with them).
Can the story of rock & roll be told without mentioning Elvis Costello? Yeah, I think so.
But hay; To each his own.

Partially true.. at one point at least.
Fair guess to say that the larger portion of their fan base has erm.. passed.. by now.
...but I'm feeling better!

1st, Hotel California & The Long Run
"It's all fun and games until someone doesn't pick up on the sarcasm"
...I lived in So Cal in the 1970s and heard them played on the radio and my turntable over and over.
My girlfriend was in love with Don Henley.
I first saw them on their On the Border tour at the Santa Monica Civic with either Jackson Browne or Linda Ronstadt as the opening act.
For an interesting read about the period and the musicians:
I put on Hotel California before work this morning, and will listen to the rest of the albums in my collection tonight. As they say theirs going to be a heart ache tonight.
