For people into popular music (that's almost all of us), if you still want or prefer a physical medium, the trusty and much-maligned (by Stereotypical Audiophiles) CD usually offers the least-offensive least-inaccurate sonics.
Moreover, those of you who have been following me know that popular music is becoming more and more available on "boutique" made-in-Japan BSCD2 and SHM-CD formats. These are regular redbook CDs made to a higher standard. And they consistently sport cleaner, more transparent sonics. That means you will be able to "see" more deeply into the music. And that, in turn, heightens, enhances, and intensifies your enjoyment of the music.
Today, I just received the SHM-CD of Metallica's Master Of Puppets. In time, I will have to report how the SHM-CD compares to the cassette, vinyl, original CD, and DCC gold CD counterparts.
Enjoy your CDs. And remember, if your CD starts off with excellent sonics, your rips will also sound better.

Can't say I fully agree on the whole SHM-CD discussion. While I will say that Universal Japan's SHM- SACDs uniformly sound quite excellent (with a few exceptions), their redbook (non-platinum) SHMs are much more hit and miss. I've owned MOP (and have heard the rest) of the Metallica SHMs, and I can't say I was nearly as blown away as you. But, as they say, vive le difference! In the redbook lineup, I sometimes find the highs unnaturally tilted up. Not always, but definitely more than once or twice. In short, I don't find SHM-CDs consistently superior to domestics. Not even close. The SACDs are another matter, though.
Right On! Lummy-
I would like a direct comparison on the Metallica CD, DCC CD & the newest SHM-CD versions. One other thing...Play it Loud!
I am in possession of two different SHM-CDs of Metallica's Master Of Puppets . You can't really see from this photo, but the disc with the label printing is UICY-20224. It has a (re)release date of 11/2/2011. This is the one I received today.
I have no information on the plain, un-labeled SHM-CD, whose catalog number is UICY-94664 [ignore the case, which is from the original Elektra redbook CD]. I would have publicly thanked the audiophile who sent me the latter, but s/he wishes to remain anonymous.
I will need more time, to compare the two SHM-CDs. But I can tell you that, as expected, both sport sonics which are cleaner, faster, more transparent than the cassette, original CD, gold CD, and vinyl counterparts. I know, I know, Stereotypical Audiophiles most likely will cling to the DCC gold CD, whose warm sonics have their own appeal. And, I have heard several pressings of the LP, whose rounded imaging makes it seem as though you are in the garage, as the mighty Metallica of yore perform for you and a few of your friends.
But clearly, the two SHM-CDs, freer from coloration and distortion, lend themselves to be played all the way through, without skipping.

It could be a cheap knock-off or promo?
The Metallica SHM-CDs with the label printed on the disc are from 2011.
The Metallica SHM-CDs with out a label are of more recent production. However, they do not come in a jewel case. Instead, they come in a crummy cardboard sleeve (pictured above), which gets easily damaged/destroyed.
Ah yes, the cardboard sleeve is part of the "mini LP" reissue movement.
I have the SHM SACD of Black Sabbath Paranoid so I know what you are talking about.
