I just found a Chippendale Cabinet that was empty. They are asking $50 for it. It's in very good cosmetic condition and looks to have the original finish. The only thing missing is the works.Should I get it? Am I buying a money pit? I really want a gramophone to do something with (listen to) the 300 or so 78s I have in boxes. I know there are other options, but the idea of bringing the Chippendale back and rescuing it from some hipster turning it into a bar appeal to me.

They look neat but will destroy your 78s.
If you want to get the best sound, buy a turntable to play them.
i have known Victor for years and always thought he had a curious name.

I call you killer because you slay me. (here I would insert a "rolleyes" icon)
that was funny though.
but that's as good a place as any.
For $50 I'd take the chance in beginning the journey and decide how
much of a money pit it needs to be down the road.
Hell, it's not like you'll be spending money on cables for it!
Worse case scenario?: you have a piece of furniture some hipster doesn't.

True.
Flip your place mat to the blue side.
