So sad to hear! I remember buying one of my first cassettes of Sly and the Family Stone in the late 60s or early 70s... Great music by eclectic artists (back then).Perhaps her legacy will live on...

The Chas. Ponte sign above her shoulder tells me this photo was taken at the famous "Music Row" on West 48th in New York City. Here, you could have bought about anything you needed from a number of stores like Ponte, Mannys, and many more.
Today, all the Music Row stores are gone with a few exceptions. There are still some piano shops left on Piano Row on West 58th but again, nothing like the old days.
That was a fun band, and it's too bad she's passed away. Her vocal energy was great.
But, "first lady of trumpet"? Not so much. Any decent high school player could play those parts. It also seems that there must have been another trumpet player on stage, 'cause I heard trumpet notes while she was taking a breath and setting her embouchure.
Check out Alison Balsom.
:)
Alison Balsom is great.
