A few months ago, I asked what to expect from my system after replacing carpet with hardwood in my LR which is where 2 channel system resides. I was expecting to have to either replace speakers and/or add another subwoofer. For years I've had a hard time getting enough bass in my system. I expected the hardwood floors to brighten up my system too much. To my surprise, it didn't. And the bass is great now. The music is more lively now. I was totally shocked at how good the system sounds even without any real room treatmen besides the furniture. We don't even have curtains up at the windows yet (just blinds) I have 2 DIY 2x4 sound panels which I've placed to catch 1st side reflections. But I've also put them in back and I think they sound better there.
I always thought my problems were rooted in the room being so big. But now, apparently, I was suffocating the sound with the carpet. All I can say is wow! It sounds much better than I thought it would. Now, I just have to decide IF I want to add another subwoofer. I had really planned to do that. But I'm not sure if I need it now. But it's tempting to see if another sub would bring even more benefit. I have a Rel Storm 3 now and its deep and tight bass which is loading the room rather well now. I guess it just needed hardwood to shine.
So my opinion is...hardwood floors are good. I should have done it years ago.

Follow Ups:
Fantastic and perfect timing. I agreed this afternoon with my wife to replace the old thick cheap carpet in the listening room with laminate hardwood in the next 2 weeks. I have been dragging my feet (for about 15 years) because I felt it would make the room too bright and create slap echoes (there are none now). I feel much better after reading your post. BTW she will not object to a nice Persian rug if I find things too harsh -- sound means nothing to her but looks are another thing.
Get well soon, artemus.
Stereo subwoofers tend to be beneficial in more ways than just a bigger bottom end. Spatial cues within the soundstage tend to sound more obvious in character, including ambient information retrieval and imaging, as well as expanded soundstage dimensions. Summing the stereo signal to mono below 150Hz even though bass frequencies are considered non-directional below that point is pretty simple minded regarding bass augmentation. Even if a listener does not wish to run a pair of subwoofers in stereo, two subwoofers can be positioned to improve bass quality based on interactions with audible characteristics of a particular listening room.
In the meantime, now that there is a new mode for synergy within your listening environment, I suggest you experiment with various footers positioned under your loudspeakers to evaluate how the configuration affects/interacts with the floor and the room.
I do indeed plan on trying different footers under the speakers. Herbies gets a good review. Right now they are on rubber/cork isopads which I bought from a HVAC supply store. I still have work to do in dialing in the system. But there is very good potential to work with.
I'm also wondering if I need another Rel Storm 3 to match my existing sub or if I can use one of their newer small T series subs. Same mfg with same hookup might work. But I may not know how well it will blend in until I try it.

We recently replaced our ceramic tile flooring in my two channel room with newer larger ceramic flooring that is less dated (per the "boss"). We also painted the room a color that mated better with the new flooring. I previously had an area rug in front of the speakers and a runner that matched the rug on the wall behind the system.
My wife decided the area rug needed to go. I was afraid that this was going to be a problem. I also removed the runner on the wall behind the system that matched the rug because the color was no longer harmonious. I was "allowed" to hang a large tapestry behind the system in a color that worked.
I was expecting the sound to be too lively and maybe tipped up, but it sounds fine. It is more lively without the rug, but isn't a big deal and actually may sound a tad more exciting.
Happy camper in a lively room.

Sounds like we had the same expectations. I haven't got things dialed in yet but the potential for good results is there

I loved the way my system sounded when it was in a room with oak flooring. At first it was a tad bright, so I just threw down a plush area rug and that tamed it. Good luck and good listening.
Post pics!
I just got the system set up on Monday.
I had a Heart Cath on Tuesday
Just got home from hospital Yesterday
Too many interruptions today
Got to figure out how to upload pictures

Hey! You kind passed over the heart cath. You ok?
-Wendell
I'm ok. I was actually surprised that they had to put in a stent. I really thought it was stress and started not to even go for the cath. I had gone to the ER last March with a heaviness in my chest. They ran a stress test and other tests and everything was ok. I had gone once before about 5 yrs previous to that and it was the same thing. So I figured this time was just a rerun
I had an incident while I was installing my hardwood flooring in my LR. The pain was right in my sternum as if someone had hit me with a sledgehammer. When it happened again the next day , I figured I'd probably better go to the Dr. He said that if I hadn't had that stress test in March he'd have sent me straight to the ER. So I saw a cardiologist who recommended a heart Cath.
After I finished my floor installation, I made arrangements for the heart cath. (OK, so I'm crazy) I really felt like it was a waste of my time and $$$. So anyway I went. They did the procedure and found 2 blockages.(100% & 90 %) For the 100%, "my body" had already done a "natural" bypass and the Dr put a stent in the other.
FTR, I would not advise anyone else to act as I did. Heart attacks are killers and they often come with little or no warning. However in my case there are circumstances which somewhat justify my actions.
First, there in no heart disease in my family. Second, I had been tested recently. Third, I only had this incident happen a couple of times. I had no incidents for about 3-4 weeks prior to the heart cath. And finally, I have a guardian angel who I trust to override my ignorance and save me from me. He does...But I'm sure I have worked him pretty hard throughout this life.

Get well soon- it will take a few weeks to recover from your procedure.
Double this time if any stent(s) were placed.
Thanks. I had one stent. I don't feel bad. Not ready to run a marathon yet. But not in bed either. I'll try to get pictures up soon.

Take it easy for 3-4 weeks -my audiophile friend.
What? No pictures????????
Good for you! It is amazing how something like choice of floor covering can dramatically affect the acoustics of a room. I hope your decision on the sub is equally felicitous.
