Apple is more at fault here than Oppo is I believe. They do not play well with other manufacturers. I cannot get the Oppo to connect to the Macs, even though I installed a Universal Media Server that Oppo told me works, I was unable to get it to talk to the Oppo, more my fault than UMS I am sure.
If the Denon device does not work I will get another Mac Mini and go to the Parasound's Saber DAC. The Oppo does a good job with DVDs and Blu-Ray, with CD and very well with SACD.
Because the Itunes software is very good at letting me access in any way I wish the 150,000 songs on over 11,000 albums and the Audirvana player does a splendid job of improving the sound by bypassing the Mac playback software and because I can sit in a dark room and control the Mac on my Ipad with Splashtop My "big" system works and sounds terrific and I am certain the Halo/Maggies will play well with the mostly acoustic music I loaded the HD with....eventually.
Thanks for your input.
Follow Ups:
I experimented with accessing music files on my MAC mini from the
Oppo wirelessly. I was able to get the Mac to allow the Oppo to
access files from its HD. And they did play OK. But I did notice
some dropout from time to time. I attributed this to my barely
adequate wireless router and network I had at the time. At the end
of the day it was just easier to copy the files to the flash drive
and plug it directly into the Oppo. I am a firm believer in
reducing links in the audio chain if possible.
It sounds like Itunes or one of the other s/w play engines that
StereoPhile reviewed in last couple of years would probably be
a better fit for you.
Before buying the Oppo I experimented with the MAC mini quite a bit
as a play engine. I bought one of the Musical Fidelity V90 Dacs
and used the USB out from the MAC to feed it. It sounded very good
but as I said before I just don't care for having to use a computer
as a play engine. After staring at a computer screen everyday for
8 hours the last thing I want to do is turn on another computer
when I get home. ;-)
except as a storage and menu system. There are no computer screens or televisions on when I listen to music. I change choices or genres and shuffle parameters on my Ipad, the music starts and I place the Ipad face down and enjoy the envelopment in near total darkness.
Music sounds so very better in the dark!!
I know you do not like to shuffle, however I do. Take the genre "blues". I have 1006 blues albums on the HD. I love so much to shuffle thru and not know what is next and I constantly run across an album artist who I forgot I had...
It is delicious!
