when CL, AA Trader and US Audio Mart are free. Everything I've posted on these sites over the last two years has sold.
Audiogon offers no additional value. You may get a higher price on eBay but you loose that in commissions.
The market appears to be very good right now based on my sales in October and so far in November.
Follow Ups:
The folks I'm interesting in buying and selling from aren't advertising or looking on craigslist, and AA trader isn't much better. Why waste your time trying to post ads where there aren't many buyers looking?
As far as I'm concerned, there are still some advantages to using Agon. In recent years they have improved their process and made buyer's and seller's obligations and expectations more clear, and they have put effort into preventing scams. Mainly I want to deal with reasonable people who actually want to buy and sell stuff with minimum hassle. Agon's fee and policies help separate the people who are serious from those who are not. Really my only complaint with Agon these days is that there's too many dealers trying to use it as their primary store front.
Audio Mart is starting to become a viable alternative to Audiogon. I don't know how they would be for dispute resolution though.
I'm selling high end home audio, pro audio and rare LPsSACDs/CDs. I haven't had any trouble selling on CL, AA and Audio Mart although eBay usually works best for the higher priced LPs, SACDs and CDs. Scams are easy to avoid if you have any common sense.
I'm glad Audiogon is working for you. In my experience, it offers no advantage. I've sold just about all the gear I need to since we returned to the US. Now that the weather in Phoenix is cooler, I'll be focusing my attention on selling LPs on eBay.
I don't buy much, just sell. Since I'm an honest seller, I don't have disputes. As a buyer, Paypal has never been a problem for dispute resolution.
I don't think Agon is the best place for selling silver and vinyl disks, just gear. For what they offer, the 1-2% fee doesn't seem unreasonable to me. But xx Audio Mart has a lot more action than it did just a year or two ago, so it may be worth trying both. If you have a piece of gear to sell and you want to list it at $2000, put up an add for $2k on US Audio Mart and a Premium listing for $2050 on Audiogon and see what happens.
I am going to try audiomart and have used some free forum classifieds. Audiogon has in the past been sort of the to go place for buying and selling but maybe not so much any more. CL in my area is definitely not a place to post high end gear, you see a bunch of over priced receivers, phones and the like and it's treated like a yard sale basically. I might still put it up to see what happens, maybe if someone searches it may come up in another area.
Of the three, Audio Mart has been by far the most effective. AA Trader is a nice, free service and I''ve had some luck there.
We have the same problems with Craigslist; funny about all the high priced receivers. Yes, it's definitely better for cars, boats, bikes and junk around the house you need to part with but I have found some great, cash buyers for some audio gear, guitars and pro amps.
I did like Audiogon prior to 2008 when we moved abroad; the fees were reasonable back then. When we returned to the US about 2.5 years ago, I took a look at Audiogon and saw that they were too expensive for me. I too was worried at first, selling at the free sites. It turned out just fine.
