Mike's recordings are fantastic, you will hear excerpts in many of our videos.
all that effort and then release on 16 bit redbook CD?
Have you listened to it? "Holt's law of recordings" sure seems to apply to the tracks I sampled (1, 7 & 11). I'm apprehensive about the remaining tracks. Curious what others think about the performances.
If musicians are exposed to excessive hype and awareness of special procedures and technology involved in a recording session, should it be surprising it may have a negative effect on performance?
The ability to "perform" in spite of such distractions is the mark of professionalism...IMO. An audience can be very distracting but doesn't preclude a great performance.
A well recorded 16 bit redbook CD can be excellent
I concur- it would be hard to go wrong w/ this disc!
a perfect metaphor for those of us who crave that initial audiophile high that we cannot recapture.
There are plenty of "audiophile" recordings with SSQ that just aren't worth listening too beyond that.

Very nice, cello, harp, organ with choir, chamber.
A nice selection. I wouldn't bother otherwise.

OK, just read the link details.
Sounds like my cup of, especially since it includes an Ellington related tune.
Seems similar in style to some MA recordings I have.
Thanks!

Interesting guy Mike Valentine. Ex-BBC sound engineer and one of the world's top underwater cinematographers - for example the Venetian underwater climax for Casino Royale (the Daniel Craig one) was filmed and, I believe, directed by him.Vinylphiles may be interested that he has also started to produce direct to disc recordings. Two are available, one of Vivaldi and one of big band music.
I was fortunate to attend a talk by him in Bath (the city - nothing underwater :-) a few years back. He is a compelling and entertaining speaker playing some great recording demonstration pieces; original files being played directly from his Nagra machine.

is a comparison between DtoD and tape recorded at the same session, same mixing, just recorded to tape. Outstanding performances and sound of classic big band tunes. The Vivaldi is another great sounding "Four Seasons" though I prefer other performances. It is a good addition to the 5 or 6 I already own.
By denying scientific principles, one may maintain any paradox.
