I have an opportunity to choose between the following receivers available locally for approximately the same price: Luxman R-117, Technics SA 5170, and Kenwood KR 9600. Whichever I choose will be used to power a pair of Bose 901 Series I. Given the choices, which one would give me the best receiver for the money. Your thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated before I take the plunge. Thank you.
Follow Ups:
It sounds pretty good with plenty of power for speakers less efficient than the 901's. I run JBL L-100's on mine and it's got a great 70's vintage sound. The phono section is pretty good if you plan on using a TT and it has inputs for two.
The Kenwood is built like a tank but not easy to take apart for cleaning switches and pots, which you will likely need to do on occasion with anything this old.
I think you would be happy with any one of them so go with your gut.
i have to vote for the kenwood for this reason - the 901 equalizer puts an unusual demand on the current requirement of an amplifier. the others listed aren't in the same league in that respect. An older Luxman or bigger Technics would do the trick, but among those the 9600 is best qualified to drive the 901 specifically.

personally I would've picked the Kenwood, or better yet a vintage silver face Pioneer SX series.
I don't know the efficiency of your speakers, but if they're inefficient, the Technics should be eliminated from your survey, it has about one-fifth the power of the other two.....
If your speakers are inefficient, I'd recommend either an Onkyo TX-8500 (original, not mkII) or Sansui G-901DB. If your speakers are efficient, I'd recommend a Harman Kardon 430, 730, 930, or hk560.
If I had to choose from just the three you mention, it's the Luxman.
I will dissent from the Luxman chorus and recommend the Kenwood-
The Kenwood is a great unit with an exceptional tunner,
While I love Lux, and have an early '80s R-5030,
there are some shortcomings
If I were to buy a Lux receiver I would go older...
Not all the logic controlled switches etc.
Happy Listening
Can't thank all of you enough. 3 votes for the Luxman, and my brother-in-law who has more audio gear than anyone I know agrees, although he said I couldn't go wrong with any of them. I was leaning towards the Kenwood with the Technics a close second due to their more "vintage" look that dovetails nicely with my wood base turntable and Teac reel to reel but now I've moved the Luxman to the top. I have to decide by this afternoon so I can close the deal with the local seller so if anyone out there has any additional input I would love to hear it. Thanks again.
It was hooked to the Original Large Advents. I could never get a good bass line out of it. I never could really like it. I sold it and pulled my Harmon Kardon 730 out of the closet and had it repaired. The Lux had replaced it after a channel went out. But the Luxman never ever sounded anywhere near as good as the HK.
Neither did the Technics or the Kenwood. Todd Kreiger has given you good advice. My suggestion, Find an HK430, 730 or 930.

Very much the Luxman. When buying used gear I try to figure out what an original MSRP of something was in order to tell who it was marketed towards. While this usually ends in good results all results will vary. I also look for higher end brands and this is a great brand. I looked it up and this originally was $1200 in 1980 so that is what I would pick up. Here is a link to one sold on the interwebs that will give you good idea
I bought this one new many years ago, loved it. Not too much later moved on to separates, but I would take this any day over Kenwood or Technics receivers of the day.
