Can you break in an amp if there are no speakers attached to it?
In any case, I recently had a conversation about this kind of topic, and suggested that the user should make all the pertinent measurements when new, and then again "after" breaking it in. To my knowledge, no one has done this. Maybe the manufacturers have, but I haven't seen any data from them. Has anyone else?

(Unless it's an electrostatic or field coil speaker.... )
Running an amp without speakers connected is akin to running a phono stage with the output *disconnected* from the line stage.... Which is NOT the same as running the phono stage connected to a line stage that's turned off. The phono stage will likely still see the load if connected to the line stage when it's turned off.

Some amps don't like not seeing a load attached. I understand something like a resistor attached to the amp terminals would allow you to break it in safely without using speakers. Perhaps someone else can expand on that?

You could start with an FR graph, harmonic distortion plot, an impulse response, and a "waterfall" MLSSA graph, and add whatever else you think would be useful.
"New, out of the box, versus 100 hours of burn-in" would be interesting. You'll be a pioneer.

Do forgive me if I am adressing the wrong topic but this thread has moved around a bit starting with a phonostage and now, apparently, moving on the loudspeakers (I think).
The set of meaurements suggested by you are appropriate for louspeakers (e.g. MLSSA)so I will return to your question as to whether anyone has performed pre and post burn in measurements. They certainly have. Keith Howard (I believe) doing this many years ago for a number of comparative speakers in one of the British magazines.
Was there a measureable difference? Yes. I suspect things would not be so straightforward with purely electronic components though.
- coz I sure as hell ain't gonna lay out my hard-earned, to buy it! ;-))
