Winner of "Statement showing least knowledge of basic physics" by Bybee from Cal. Show audio review/ John Marks/ Steophile:
"Air molecules are a barrier to sound waves, and inhibit their free travel from speaker to your ears"
Presumably sound is best propogated in a vacuum?

Actually I find a Nitrogen filled room is much more dynamic and tonally inert.
Trouble is the breathing hose makes a lot of noise.
You just can't win.

Education is a good thing
Just to correct. The piece about Bybee was written by Jason Victor Serinus not John Marks. BTW, sound is indeed attenuated by the atmosphere (call it air)- see URL below.NB: we would all be grateful if URL links are posted into the box provided at the bottom of the "Post a Message" form. This then makes them clickable within the text posted.

"Under 'normal' circumstances, atmospheric absorption can be neglected except where long distances or very high frequencies are involved."
Are audiophiles ever under "normal" circumstances ;-)?
On the other hand without the air attenuation would be 100%.
If you don't like the 'attenuation' in air/gas filled environment, ie losses incurred because air molecules are not fixed to each other, try living in an environment filled by solids.
Personally I don't have any preferences regarding the attenuation of sound in an atmosphere. But,yes indeed, I must say that being able to breathe enhances my enjoyment of music no end.
My favorite was hearing a salesman say that
"normal" speakers when they produce sound,
the sound just falls to the floor but with
Magnepan the sound is free to fill the room.
Don't get me wrong I like Maggies but ... MAN!

I wouldn't go crazy over an end user not understanding the physics of audio..... I'd be more concerned over Grammy winning music artists not knowing who Beethoven or Miles Davis was..............
Laughing...
never sounds as good here at hope in San Francisco.Too much 'air' here at sea level. =:-0

Don't ask me why, but this scene from the old movie "Kill the Umpire!" came into my head......
I figured that everyone knew by now that in space no one can hear you scream....
since you mention him.
Ever notice how your system/music may sound better or worse depending
on the humidity level?
There's a direct correlation 'tween that and air molecules and how they move about,
get in OR out of the way, do their dance with sound waves. Behave.
JB's statement in that piece doesn't sound far-fetched, let alone very.

I was giving some thought to that as well over the last week or so as I have been listening for qualities regarding some edginess on the highs with respect to my digital playback. I noticed that it seems to dissipate when the humidity is higher, as it frequently is here in Florida, but reappears when it's down.
Good!

So much music, so little time!
I thought about the operation of horn speakers, but then MRI ws mentioned ,which can only lead to quantum physics, then worse, "crystals".
I think air sucks as a sound transmission substance.
but if we are going to "treat" the air in our listening rooms we would have to "treat" the concert hall.
This stuff is just silly.

Air molecules are both a barrier to and a vehicle for the transmission of sound waves, simultaneously.
Think of the asphalt beneath the wheels of a car. The asphalt simultaneously supports the car and creates drag upon the wheels.
begging the question do Bybee products add more "air" to the listening experience?
Use of headphones would/should seriously decrease the amount of air molecules inhibiting
travel between speaker/ear, but then one is stuck listening to music through headphones
which seriously inhibits the listening experience, at least for me.
Earbuds even more so.
Jeez, everything about this hobby needs to be made SO darn complicated!

Febreze doesn't just mask unwanted air molecules. It neutralizes them.
I could plug it in next to the negative ion generator, thusly killing three audiophile bird tweaks
with two plug-ins.
The third being utilizing unused outlets.

I was talking about a shot glass. Febreze makes spray products too?
A shot glass of typical contents = the the favored tweak these parts.
Didn't realize you had taken Febreze to that next level!

...and my limited experience with Jack Bybee's products has actually been positive. Including the Gold Bullet in my Power Wing II and two variants of his Golden Goddess power cords.
Obviously just my 2¢.
Be well,

I realize that Ridley Scott and not Stanley Kubrick was the director of the film Alien. Just making a point that when folks follow science, sometimes the result isn't quite what we're used to or expect.
Continue to don my suit.

Just think about some stuff you see written about some of the ridiculously expensive accessories that are being sold.
It sounds better than telling you they're stuff is magical.

Sure, that's why many folks still use tubes...

all the best,
mrh
for the movie "Alien" and presumably it meant in a vacuum that no one can hear you scream because you can't propagate sound waves. Why do you think so much of the movie 2001 is silent?
Director Stanley Kubrick used music in those scenes, quite effectively I thought.
Oh, damn, I'm pitting on my flame retardant suit. :)

What does nt stand for?
I keep seeing it on this forum.
(nt) = no text
Thanks.
I guess now I'm confused as to what 'no text' means. If a person doesn't have something to write, why type nt at all?
Sorry, but I feel like I must be missing something here.
It's not as effective for those of us using the VBulletin-esque skin.
I can't stand the 90s-era walls of text...

I always thougt it meant not true !

Whew, thanks Gary, now I think I've got it! nt
