a little low powered amp with compression? I have a neighbor with a large room/high ceiling (12ft) that has tried a few things for sound, lastly a sound bar.
Due to the room size and its a hard room too, his hearing loss (he is 80) he is having trouble hearing the TV especially movies which he streams from Netflix.
So with his hearing loss and the high dynamic range of movies where explosions are loud and dialog is/can be very quiet I thought a little 10/20 watt amp w/compression or even external compression and then a decent speaker on the table next to the chair where he sits (2ft distance to ear) would be good. If he has a situation that physically will allow a speaker to his left AND right I'd do that.
I've never really seen a little amp w/compression so maybe a little amp and a compressor. I was thinking of this pair from PE for $125

We have a similar issue with watching movies in the family room. I'm in charge of turning the Volume UP during quiet scenes then turning it DOWN when things get loud. It doesn't really matter to me, I just go with the flow, but my wife hates it so I'm constantly at the ready with the remote control.
From the same brand you're looking at, I came across this Rolls SL33 Stereo Program Limiter:

I have no experience with this but thought I would offer up another choice for you to consider.
Try a couple of compression pedals before the existing amplifier. Just need to wire up some RCA to 1/4" phone jacks. It would probably work pretty good.
Here is an example, many different brands to choose from.
You could probably find them used at the pawn shops, although you will need two of them for stereo.http://www.jimdunlop.com/product/m102-dyna-comp-compressor

sound is presented out of polarity;
try reversing polarity of the speakers and usually that helps a lot
Earl you say he doesn't want "cans" but maybe you might convince him to give them a try? I'm thinking some reasonably priced "on ear" type so he can still hear other things in the house.
Does he live alone? If there is anyone else in the house then adaptations that help him but reduce quality for others may not be a good idea.
My dad had hearing aids but the time came when it was no longer reasonable to turn up the TV volume for his needs. So I found a small integrated amp (actually at Radio Shack) and with a long interconnect from the TV and the least expensive Grado 'phones he could adjust the level he needed right at his recliner chair and hear fairly well.
"You can't know what the "best" is unless you have heard everything, and keep in mind that given individual tastes, there really isn't any such thing." HP
Yes I've setup things like that before. Cans however will accelerate hearing loss and since he doesn't want them anyway I'm not going to try and sway him. Besides compression is still required for these silly over-dynamic movies today. If you set the volume so you can hear the dialog the explosions and music will deafen you.
I found a nice used compressor which is key to hearing movies well and that little amp with a set of decent book shelf speakers should do it for $50 spent plus shipping.
I'm a Grado dealer and that's about the same as SR 60's shipped to me,

Super Nice, and easily adjusted to Max.
Here is a linky:
Some of the HDTVs I've had/have a night time[?] setting, that compresses the volume.
Take a look in his TVs settings.
It may not be enough, but worth a try. I would also think that there is a very cheap "pro" compressor available. Take a look at these [see link], not sure if any of them would work for your needs.
Nice link! Can save a lot there
