I have so say why in 2015 people still use mp3 I have no idea.
I listened to Google music Burzum album at Google 320kbps and then switched to Deezer Elite FLAC (both streaming services on my Sonos Connect modified by wyred for sound) and it completely a night and day difference.
This led me to thinking, mp3 is dead IMHO. Why anyone would use mp3 in 2015 is really making me dry heave.
Follow Ups:
I might be the only person on AA who prefers listening to 320kbps MP3 over FLAC decoded in real time....... Sure MP3 loses a smidgen of resolution, but some of the time-domain distortions in FLAC playback are kind of creepy...... Most notably the attenuation in vibrato or inflections....
I was at someone's house, he was playing an Ella Fitzgerald tune on a an expensive server.... I still noticed the attenuation of vibrato in her voice, compared to how I normally hear it. The problem seems to occur regardless of the type of playback source used.
... that's a non-starter, if one's main objective is ultimate sound quality.
Especially if we're talking locally stored music, and not streaming services, where FLAC format is how it's being served real-time.
Couple more thoughts:
- Storage is incredibly cheap these days, so there's no reason to store music compressed, as FLAC or otherwise;
- If someone hears no difference between playing WAV and real-time decoded (on the renderer - not server!) FLAC, it's time to start looking what's wrong with one's system, or possibly hearing. Decoding to WAV on the server, prior to being sent to rendering appliance, is a different matter.
Yes, Todd. . . I have no doubt that you are! ;-)
I've purchased more than one download where the sound samples in MP3 had better quality than the full resolution download. The problem was harshness that was eliminated by the MP3 encoding. There are other recordings where the only way to improve the sound quality is to activate the OFF switch. Fortunately, I don't have many of these duds.:-)

Laughing....
I only listen to MP-3 if I am auditioning tunes to see if I like the artist. After that, if it is available on Vinyl, I'll grab it.
If vinyl isn't available, any high res down-loadable format is preferred, and finally, if I absolutely must have it, CD...

two sources really, 1. FLAC streaming services, 2. Bandcamp.
most of the stuff I listen to is independent labels, so some are not available on the streaming services. All of it is available on bandcamp.
Seeing how base iPhone comes with pitiful 16GB with ludicrous amount Apple charges to upgrade memory, MP3 is most definitely not dead.
When I'm at work I do a lot of walking. I like to listen to my Samsung note 3 (primarily for background music only). The output speaker quality is limited so the format isn't really crucial for me.
90% of my tunes piping out come from youtube videos converted to mp3 (music minus the video, created here ). Obviously youtube is a gold mine for music ie 'smooth jazz' searches can sometimes yield 6 hour sets. On my phone I create folders by genre which for me is a lot better than playlist.

I thought it had internet support? 4G or LTE or what have you, no?
Please name your price of $0 FOR my music. Links to my sites on that page will take you also on a journey to DSD and high resolution FLAC if you got nothing to do on this lazy weekend.
You can compare the mp3 release with he FLAC the WAV and he DSF(dsd) of my album blacklab.
Good day to everyone and everything ...

some fantastic stuff going on in "moving mountains" I am listening to Silmica now. I play bass (that's what I used in that album I made), that is some good bass in there, reminds me of Les Claypool although a lot more mellow.
What an outside the box thinker that boy is!!!
BTW, All of the Silmica tracks on Feedbands.com are improvised- other than knowing that the computer is in record, that is the only pressure for us to be spontaneous and figure something out!
Thanks for listening!
Now register and vote! It would help us out a lot!
Cheers
