Hi WG,
There was a time when my main system had to be the first place I auditioned new music. Serious business, meaning very passionate and respectful to hear the full and accurate musical experience.
As I said in my original posting, listening sessions have become more circumstantial, and perhaps I have mellowed a bit.
My son's, who are now married, both had their own small room systems, made up of products such as Nu-Force, Cambridge, small dynamic Mission and Quad speakers. I learned to appreciate the different perspective of their systems, how much they enjoyed them because they were theirs, and of course the father/son companionship. (Doors closed, no mom's allowed!)
Now that they have moved out, my wife and I spend quality time reading and listening to our "boombox" upstairs in our living room. I've come to appreciate this time, and end up going through about 4 to 5 cd's into the late hours. My "boombox" is of the "football shaped" Teac variety. I had won it in a contest. Pretty fair for a "boombox".
I have an Audi A4. It's a couple of years old, mixed reviews on the sound system, but to me definitely better than the 3 Passats and 2 4Runners I had before. CD's being on constant rotation in there when I am not listening to sports news. The iPod Classic actually would be ideal for the car, and can also dock with the car's system. Something to ponder down the road.
Now, I don't mean to ignite a comparison in the aforementioned systems, but my original intention I guess was to say that though listening on my main system is very precious to me, I prefer to listen to as much music as I can under any circumstance.
When I do listen to my main rig, I let the tubes warm up, I perfectly position myself in a vice like critical listening position because of my electrostatics, turn off the lights, and spend hours of heaven.
But these moments are few and far between as my system is in our den, and anytime spent there is solo. I actually ask my wife if it's okay to go listen to the stereo. Not just because it's a break from companionship, but respect for her having to have music blaring from the den. (Yes, I can actually make my ESL63's shake the walls. Well, a little bit anyway.)
So as I said in the beginning, it is circumstances that dictate my listening opportunities. And as originally posted, if others were in similar circumstances, to the point where it was okay or even preferred to listen on a secondary system first. My implication meaning to "get used" to the music first, before subjecting it to a revealing system.
Love your analogy of plugging one's ears. Yes, essentially I have fallen into that category. But it ain't so bad.
Everyone contributing their thoughts here really are a reflection of the passion and priority of how they listen to their music.
It's been wonderful to read the posts.
Perhaps more thoughts are yet to come on this subject.
Cheers!

Me too (almost). I listen on my desk system, TV system, car/truck, headphones off of laptop, etc. But for me there are times I'd prefer silence over any music, such as when the system is soooooo poor: damaged fuzzy/rattley-sounding drivers; staticy or muffled sounding; in department stores and restaurants; etc.

Me too. I only listen to my main rig once or twice per week when my wife is away as it is in our living room. I'll certainly get my own space in our next place so I can listen whenever I'd like without disturbing others.
When my wife and I listen while reading we alternate music taste. So now not only am I settling (enjoying) boom box sound, I'm listening to country music as well. I hope I don't implode this thread!
Cheers!
