For some time now I've considered whatever configuration my Music
Listening System happens to be as "starting" at the wall & after
it has been connected to my Equitech 1.5Q BPT conditioner !
I don't know how many times I've left a High End audio store totally underwhelmed by music systems comprised of much higher priced components
than mine, that I don't have the heart to tell the salesperson that the overall sound wasn't musically engaging enough to be of interest to me with
source material that I know is engaging through my system !
I think you may always be fighting an uphill battle with musicality if
you consider your system as starting with your components

I just auditioned a DAC at a well-regarded Hi-Fi store. I am not going to fault the high-end store, but I choose it because it does a good deal of analog business (over the store that brags about it's 1/2 million dollar home theatre custom installs).
Well, if I were these stores, I'd just have the best systems already configured and have an easy means of inserting component XYZ.
As soon as I have time, I am going to build my music server on a stick, but until then, I'll be at the mercy of these stores!
I guess the point I was trying to make is that what you "can" hear from
a playback setup isn't necessarily the true character of what it is capable
of & it is part of a system whether you recognize it or not !
