I again respect your point of view and will stop short of saying youre wrong but-as I mentioned in my OP, both Ray Samuels and Fried Riem (Violectric's design engineer) take this view and while neither the Nighthawk or Violectric 600 are balanced, the sound of both are good, but hardly state of the art. AFAIK, engineering complete solutions to the shortcomings of SMPS's is years off in the future. Balanced is not the answer to them.
and???
Meitner, Linn, Chord, Nagra, Rowland are among the well respected companies who are showing that SMPS is a viable option.
Probably the biggest disadvantage of SPMS is the industry lacks experience designing them. Whereas the industry is full of expertise in linear power supply design.
But I suspect they will become more prevalent as time goes on. They certainly seem have some advantages on paper, like not requiring a big transformer that generates a strong low frequency EMI field, and then balanced circuits to reject the hum.

Aww Geesh! No disprespect, but I am not talking about amps. I am talking about phono stages and pre-amps.

'See the section on Power factor.'
It seems to me that the power factor is an SMPS weakness.

Well you should mention it to Harmon , they own tons of pro stuff with it , as well as their high end ML line, it wasn't too well received..
One would think they had it figured out...
