Many audiophiles with large heads will spend exorbitant prices to own gear no one else can touch. This puts them above reproach by others looking to pursue the hobby.
I have heard many very expensive systems. Some are able to attain an almost unbelieveable recreation of a recording, while others showed just how clueless they were as to what instruments actually sound like.
AudioGon has become a refuge for dealers and industry people who want to be able to control the forums and get rid of anyone "rocking the boat" IMHO.That is why "the Guild" was created there..Good riddance.

I suspect that the pricing structure bears exactly what the market will bear. That may not be your local market...but someone's local market it is.
Remember, all of the cost of goods and services is relative depending on your income. To Mr Bill Gates, i doubt that he would think for a second that high end gear is pricey. To the guy in the street who is holding down the 'nine to five' with five kids and a wife to support, a very different matter!
"Forget it Jake, it's a BUBBLE!"
In the early 1970s, real-estate investors flooded the Florida market with capital to build condos. Each of the major Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) thought that they could capture half the market. Problem was, there were more than four major actors, so the Miami market was quickly overbuilt by more than 100%. Prices crashed and some big banks were hurt badly.
All those real estate and banking professionals certainly thought they were acting rationally, but they lacked true market information.
I think that for most companies, especially those that have not been up there before, building a loudspeaker that sells for more than $100,000 a pair is a desperation move.
