I don't think the prices per se are the point of everyone who comments on such products. I believe the deep seated disgust is more around how could such a product be worth that much money and why would anyone in their right mind spend that?
The seller feels they need to charge what they charge and if someone wants the product, and they have the money, let the world continue to turn. Six figure audio buyers may or may not be enthsiasts/hobby oriented. Audiogon just happens to be the place such transactions have the best chance of happening.

Of course, this stuff is not worth that much. The bigger issue is why in the world is it even being created? My hope for mankind recedes daily ;-)
It's for Show & Tell.
Almost any craftsperson would jump at the chance to make a "cost-no-object" statement piece, whatever that might be, at least once or twice in his/her lifetime. These statement pieces eventually find service at shows, after having served as experimental R & D projects. The rich guys run around and buy collectible things from artists and artisans, the cows in the corn supply us with manure for growing next years crop. You might be right to question the need for such an economy, but there it is.
Actually a cost no object items is the most difficult to make, if truly attempted it makes less money than one with a budget, due to the effort involved. In the end , the small numbers involved to recoup cost, will push the excessive prices that has become common place ,of course pretenders will try to cash in , mostly with under performing pieces full of bling, bling and overdone bits.
Regards....
