I guess I didn't make my point very clear: Is this a hobby or an exercise in spending and conspicuous consumption?
Follow Ups:
The vast majority of people have no clue about audio so you're not likely to impress people with your show of wealth by buying audio gear - indeed most people have never heard of an Ongaku - you would likely be more likely to impress visitors to your home with Bose because know that name.
Shows of wealth are usually associated with clothes, jewelry/watches, and cars and I suppose homes.
Clothes rarely impress me as I know some of the people in this industry who make designer labels - the mark-up is silly. So people who wear some of this stuff are actually more laughable to me than anything else. Jewelry is largely a self propped up scam (to outright supporting murder), and watches - see clothes.
Cars - well I live in Hong Kong so anything less than a Lambo/Bentley/Bughatti doesn't impress me in the slightest. So you are just showing me that you can't afford the really good stuff - just the overpriced poo.
The guys with money who are into stereos typically don't brag about it nor are they slaves to names - many have custom built systems that would embarrass the stuff that magazines tout, those into cars buy interesting rare cars cause they're cool, and the watch guys will choose the hand made manual movement variety and rare watches - not just the showy expensive one.
And often those expensive products can offset lower priced gear. You can buy that $110k Ongaku but you can buy the killer great sounding I-Zero for $2,400 or $3,600 OTO Phono SE which has been around for 23 years and is damn tough to beat in the tube world.
In any wealth range you have the good the bad and the ugly.
The fact is that rich guys need to be able to buy stuff the rest of the people can't buy - otherwise what the hell would be the point of being rich? You need to have the carrot for some people to work in often unethical fields - working in a shady outfit that gets paid millions but has a bottle of pills to stop his ulcer because he knows what he is helping the company do (kill wildife, ruin the planet, poison people, etc). So to offset his pain he gets himself a Bentley.
But you have plenty of rich guys who buy some nice things for themselves but are working on major projects to combat the tearing down of the rain forests or set up numerous programs to help society etc. And those big ticket buys do help the economy - the company is stronger and can afford to pay employees more - or indeed hire more employees, taxes are paid from the purchase etc.
don't worry; some people can't understand and are LOST in their own thoughts about how you must not be enjoying your own audio pursuit all the while wondering about others' silly use of the hobby.

Oh, your point is/was abundantly clear.
"This" can be anything an individual makes it.
You can moan, bitch and even preach morality if you wish but private enterprise is free to make what they please and individuals are free to purchase what they please.
I'm still not sure how amps selling for $100K affects you in any way, shape or form.
If you attempt to answer the questions I posed you might save yourself some unnecessary worrying over nothing.
Life's good, enjoy it, I do.
Cheers.

The OP doesn't seem to be stressed about the issue, he just made an observation and asked a question. You, on the other hand, seem to be getting your panties in a wad over it.
... an insulting douche.
He posted far more than just a question.
He is so calm and relaxed about this audio hobby he writes;
• I know the world went to hell years ago
• but this hobby is looking even stranger OUTSIDE the Asylum than in
• It's totally blinged out, with stuff you couldn't buy using a second and third mortgage on your house.
• on sale as a "demo" for $79,900. That's U.S. dollars.
• They don't even mention white cotton gloves
• Is it really possible to spend $110K on an integrated amplifier
• Do the electrons realize how lucky they are to be riding on all that silver wire?
• Where is all this going?
Reads like a moan/whinge/bitch to me. Certainly not rational thoughts with a grip on reality. I'm making a calm and measured observation.
If you and the other guy want to talk drivel about 2nd & 3rd mortgages over a 80K amp then you both must live in third world countries.
If you and the other guy answered the questions in my first reply you both maybe might learn something.
Till then, life's good, enjoy it.
Cheers.

Wow, you ARE obsessing.
If your questions were worth answering and not like some beer-soaked Yobbo blather I would have answered them.
... If I had been drinking I would not of been so polite.
I will leave you to take out a second and third mortgage on an Amp. LOL
I will also leave you to blather about subsidized free enterprise in the USofA in regards to an Amp built in Japan. LOL
Bitching about things you can't afford is so gauche. But at least it suits you.
Life's good, enjoy it.

Bitching about things I can't afford? Actually, I've just ordered three of them: one for the living room, one for the den, and one for the throne room. Every time I go I'll think of you.
... Yes, you are, and you're still doing it!
I doubt you've ordered three of anything in your entire life. Just a guess, but you fit the 'type'.
Think of me when you are turning green from rich Americans buying Japanese amps. LOL
Life's good, enjoy it .... it is so serious LOL

Yes, I was just asking what was going on. I think I'll go back to the Vintage Asylum. There are some ornery, preachy cats out here, going on about "free enterprise" and all that caca.
Enterprise is no more free in this country(USA)than I am a Russian astronaut.
It's always been subsidized in some way--at least since Alexander Hamilton and his gang got their hands on the central bank. The raid on the Federal Treasury in 2008 was just the latest episode.
... Oh, now it is crystal clear.
You are one of them!
LOL
Too funny, thanks for the laugh.

"Is this a hobby or an exercise in spending and conspicuous consumption?"
Can't it be both?
The great thing about being an "audiophile" is that you can do it at any age and price point and it can be equally satisfying. Ham radio is (was?) the same sort of thing. What else? Just about everything really, that's the hallmark of a good hobby IMHO.
If you do what's right for your ears, heart and wallet, you won't go wrong...
Rick
Let's hope so. Good post instead of lecture.
