I'm going to fiber optic service soon and I'll need a new modem. What are you using that is backward compatible? I'm using a Squeezebox Duet right now.

what kind of speeds- down load & up load are you getting?
I use BrightHouse and am very pleased w/ my connectivity/service.
what service?
usually they provide a router, if not and they run ethernet cable and you'll have to provide the router I've had good luck with Netgear products.
I have Verizon fiber optic, they don't support the network unless I use their "official" router they provide. I remember I spent like $500 on a Netgear router and got a letter that they were sending me an approved router to use instead. It is better that way since I don't have to manage the network myself. So if the company you are getting fiber with supplies one stick with that, less hassle.
Squeezebox duet works with wireless G, so make sure if what they provide uses wifi and if you are on wifi you can support wireless G, usually that is a "mixed" wifi setting. I run all my music devices with a wire however as it is the best way to avoid buffering and drop outs.
We don't get Verizon internet service where I live. What kind of download / upload speeds are you getting as reported by http://speedtest.net?
Our choices are Comcast or CenturyLink here. CenturyLink is the "phone company" and they have consistently lagged behind in reliability and performance when it comes to internet service.
I'm getting about 180Mbs on downloads and 24Mbs uploads.
Unless you're talking about some other kind of numerical figure I don't know how you could be getting that from Comcast or CenturyLink. I used to have Comcast and have had Fios for the last 3 years or so.Just did speedtest.net. I'm getting 92.31mbps uploads and 75.64mbps downloads, which is way faster than anything Comcast offers around here (across the Hudson from Manhattan in Jersey).

I have Comcast for internet and phone but Dish Network for TV. Dish is cheaper and has HD channels that Comcast doesn't offer in my area.
Comcast increased their internet speeds considerably just in the past year.My Comcast downloads
My Comcast uploads
My ping times are longer than before, used to get 10 - 12ms, but since I'm not a "gamer" I'll take the faster download speeds in trade for fastest latency any day. The download speeds come in real handy when I'm downloading huge OS images and patches for work.

Technical question.
Can I run both "G" and "AC" devices at the same time if the modem is backward compatible? Modems are a mystery to me right now. Since I am in love with Tidal service, I want to optimize my Wi-Fi performance when I get the fiber optic hook-up.
Tidal takes very little bandwidth relative to modern internet speeds and Wifi networking so if you're thinking of 'optimizing' for Tidal specifically, you haven't much to gain with a new "AC" Wifi router.
That being said, I couldn't tell you if the Wifi/Router/CableModem that your ISP will provide is compatible with Wireless "G". I couldn't even tell you if your ISP provides the Wifi/Router or just the CableModem. We have a choice and I chose the 'all-in-one' Wifi/Router/CableModem/Switch. And I no longer own any Wireless "G" devices.
For fastest internet speeds for downloads and such my computer is hardwired CAT5E to my Wifi/Router/CableModem/Switch. We get very fast and reliable downloads and streaming via Wifi but hardwired is more consistent so that's what I use in my home office.
The best I can get in my area is 50/3.
What Net Provider service do you have? Those stats are very, very good.

I pay for 35mbps/35mbps which about is 3.5 megabytes per second, and I get what I pay for, no fluctuation up and down, consistent connection.
they offer their insane plans (500mbps+ I think), which blow away a lot of things. I'm not a gamer nor do I need it that fast at the moment. 35mbps is enough to stream FLAC and do a lot of other things. I also get consistent HD video when video conferencing, that is where a higher upstream matters. Amazon HD movie streams work fine, everything is golden. No buffering, no peak times, everything just flies by with my setup.
bill is $140 a month with landline with all the bells and whistles. I've had it over a decade now, I was very spoiled early on.

You must have TV service/cell phone with your Verizon plan. I just renewed my 15/5@ $85 and got the "we've got a great offer for you"spiel and now have 50/50 for a few bucks less. It does include the landline.
Ran a couple of the speed test sites and the laptop does seem to perform better.
I maybe one of the few who run an antenna to the plasma! Beautiful picture for FREE! Not a power user of PC/TV
35Mb/s is actually 4.375MB/s which is pretty good.

I'm on the North Coast of NSW and subscribe to the fastest available in my area.
I am in a rural area and it is nothing like what you get.
However if I moved about 15km into town I can get; 100Mbps download and 40Mbps upload. (which is supposedly coming to my address)
But I currently get;

the satellite options are good, just saying.
there are a lot here, also north in Canada, there are a lot of satellite internet options.
my dream is to move to a rural area where I can smoke my old man tobacco pipe (the kind your grandfather might have smoked) and sit on a deck and look at the trees with satellite internet paying my bills.
... I had satellite 15 years ago when all that was available here was dial-up.
I got rid of the satellite when ADSL became available. So now the fixed wire ADSL is faster than the available satellite.
Apparently faster cable is on its way to my address. Which may mean within the year I should be able to hook up to 100Mbps download and 40Mbps upload which will be a big help here.
Cheers.
