...the difference is that multiple channels of digital audio data (and other stuff) will be transmitted instead of an analog audio signal. A new receiver will be required but the local weather and disaster info should still be readily avail.
The real brave new world is internet broadcasting. With wireless coverage increasing every day and some of the newest autos featuring wireless wifi hotspots, traditional broadcasting using big power hungry transmitters may fast become obsolete whether digital or analog , AM or FM. I foresee a day when a car "radio" (actually, any radio or music/media player) will just be a dock for a smart phone or wireless tablet or whatever the device is called at that time. Content providers will have more control over content and both they and the wireless providers will have the opportunity for multiple and varied revenue streams. Can't wait!!!
Follow Ups:
Streaming music via cellular broadband for extended periods of time would too be expensive for most people with today's cellular plans. High Rez streaming like Tidal even more so.
...just as today's developing video streaming model isn't based on yesterday's 56K LL internet connection. But as we all know, predictions of the future are usually spectacularly wrong...that's partly why it's a brave new world.
