You will find a sea of Home Theater In A Box systems which make Bose gear sound pretty useful.
I've owned 901s, Acoustimass speakers (both hand me downs).
Would I ever choose to buy them? Nope.
They weren't terrible though. I remember the 901s playing very loud and absolutely filling up the room. They were kind of fun, in a way. Good party speakers. I will say that a Bose system playing CDs is hugely better than the MP3/earbud/iPod dock crap that most people use as their primary means.
Blah!

I never cared for the 901s but I did like the 501 and 601 from the late 70s.Now were they on the same level as Quad, Magnepan, and other notables for that same era? Of course not, but pitted up against your Marantz, Pioneers, Onkyos, Sansui, etc, I've always felt those two could hold their own and then some.
