in 1982, a terrible tragedy. I had my window open slightly and heard the first impact and then sheet metal crunching and folding. I hesitated in posting this; to this day the thought of those sounds bothers me.
Follow Ups:
I was driving back from a buddy's house (near Columbia, MD) in a beater Chevy pickup. We loaded a junker washing machine in the back to give us some traction on the snowy, icy roads. I rolled into my driveway in Kensington, MD and opened the door and saw my GF watching the local news coverage of the tragedy on TV.
It was horrific to watch the rescue helicopters flying low over the heads of the folks struggling in the icy Potomac River waters. And I'll never forget the one guy who kept slipping out of the harness and eventually gave it to a stewardess (I think) so she could be rescued. He subsequently drowned, IIRC.
What a horrible day that was...

I do remember some of the thing you mentioned. I remember one hero who jumped in the icy waters and rescued someone who could not grasp the float device. Bless that man.
I also remember Howard Stern on DC 101FM making some horrible comments and jokes the next morning, trying to be funny, all (probably) to shock and get ratings. Some jokes you just don't go there.
On air he called Air Florida and tired to book a flight to the 14th St. Bridge. Extremely bad taste and he was rightfully excoriated for it...

That guy is a piece of crap.
Wow, I can't even imagine.
