I'll start by saying that I began listening to Pink Floyd in 1970, and I greatly admire Roger Waters' work with the band.
With that out of the way, Art Dudley used to call Dark Side Of The Moon a sound effects record, back in his Listener magazine. While I understood what he meant, I never totally agreed with him, as I find the LP musically enjoyable.
But I would easily give Amused To Death the title of a sound effects recording. I have the Master Sound Super Bit Mapping CD, and while it's spectacular to listen to, it has a total of about two minutes of musical involvement for me, interspersed among the barking dog, the old man talking about the war, the horse drawn sleigh, etc.
I've read that most people think Lennon's Revolution 9 is nothing but a sound effects track, and consider it the Beatles worst "song", but not me. I pick up on a musical thread which runs through 9, and actually enjoy listening to it. I'd like to say the same thing about Amused, but it eludes me.
I'm glad you're looking forward to the new release, and I hope you enjoy it.
Follow Ups:
If I am asked to put a "sound effects" label on any of the PF/RW catalog, then yes, Amused probably would get my blessing.
I'd also venture to add The Wall to that list, given the amount of "foley" between the songs... Don't get me wrong, ALL the titles you've listed could easily qualify as "sound effects" records, but I still like the music for each.
I'll be buying Amused when it comes out (but not pre-ordering it), simply because I'm an Analog Junkie (and the Vanilla Sony/Columbia CD isn't so hot sounding, IMHO)!
Cheers,

I can't listen to it any more. As some here have commented in the past, it really should have been titled "Bored to Death".
...DSOM and Amused to Death.
