Good sleuthing ole chap --!!

This stuff goes on all the time on Audiogon for stuff sold in the LA region. I've sent Agon numerous examples only to be told "they're looking at it". I have also been told by an LA dealer that there is a group that "trades" equip back and forth to both maintain pricing and
generate "volume". Unless you can put "eyes on it" you would be well advised to stay clear. My own rules are: must be able to see it, or must drop ship ( new ) from manufacturer, otherwise i will not buy on agon.
You're audiogon standards are higher than mine. I've had hundreds of successful transactions on audiogon over a 10+ year period.
I look for members with positive feedback over a period of time. I look for actual equipment photos, not stock photos from brochures. I engage the seller in conversation through the audiogon system, email, or phone call. I never sell with the BUY IT NOW button, only the MAKE OFFER button so I always get to choose my buyer. I generally avoid over seas transactions but I had a couple that were successful after thoroughly checking out the buyers. If it looks 'fishy' to me in any way, I just wait for a better oppportunity.
Obviously none of this is a guarantee but it's served me well over the years.
I've had plenty of transactions on Agon as both buyer and seller. I've not dealt with any overseas buyers, but it wouldn't bother me to do so as long as the deal felt "right".
Generally I've found that the folks I've interacted with on Agon have been standup guys who gave, or received, fair value for the items on offer. And I can also say that I have gotten a few "smokin'" deals there.
The keys are knowing exactly what you want, what you're willing to pay for it, and vetting the buyer or seller appropriately to ensure a fair, open, and honest transaction. I have yet to be burned, and I hope it stays that way...
