For the first time in my new business (where I go around and do electronic/computer repair) I spent time with a client that is an audiophile. Actually we "met" (but not f2f) when he purchased from Econotweaks a couple of years ago
It represents the first time I've been in the company of another audiophile in some time. Probably 5 years or so. The last time being at a Ribfest and or with some of its attendees. He has a really nice all analog setup with tubes, vinyl and Quad ESL's. It had been a while since I heard Quads, probably 10+ years when I worked at a Quad dealer. Such a nice sound.
But just hanging around another like us, with the bug for great sound was a real treat.

I would think that there are many audiophiles in the VA/DC/MD triangle?
At least a few.
...to get out of AA into the real world.
And find we're not alone.
yes that was it face to face interaction - a nice guy too. It was fun just being there.

Recent obits aside, the one audio buddy I have here in Minnesota has pretty much gotten out of it for various reasons, so now it's just me. I still enjoy it, but don't do anywhere near as much dedicated listening as I used to. Downsizing residences required that the big 'stats had to go away, and be replaced by some good quality monitors. They're nice, but they just don't quite have that holographic quality that I used to find so engrossing with the 'stats.
It's good to be able to share, as you've noted. It helps to maintain the interest, and sharing new music is always enjoyable. Life goes on.

Try them closer to you. Panels beam a bit and so are acoustically closer than they appear. I wonder if a rough rule of thumb might not be having the monitors subtend the same visual angle as the 'stats?
Smaller spaces have some upsides in that you usually sit closer and can run lower power levels for the same SPL reducing distortion.
I've enjoyed very satisfying performance (near and mid-field) just from small monitors with Ti tweeters. They are very precise but at least the ones I have (Celestion 3's) cut corners by not adequately cutting corners at the boundaries. I killed most of the surface wave re-radiation with rubbery weather striping and they aren't the least bit shrill but are very extended and open. But that was quite a while ago (although they still work fine) and it looks to me that manufacturers have spent significant efforts in these areas since.
Good listening...

My listening position is actually fairly close - about 9', which is as close as the room will allow. I'm running the VACs in triode mode which gives me 35 WPCH, and it's more than enough with the Force subs filling in the low end.
I fear that I may have mislead you, though. The system really does sound quite good. It only lacks that ineffable quality that allowed me to forget for brief moments that I was listening to a stereo system at all. The Martin Logans were quite good at that, although I'd never buy another ML product for other reasons.
I've moved on, and it's okay. Other things are taking precedence now, which is probably a good thing in my case.
