Yeah it's all simple and pure in theory...
You're certainly correct - I bet someone could point to a "created" or "marketed" demand for things. The various "me-too" products that you simply must have in order to be cool. Product that leads demand.
The electric razor blade maybe? I never met a guy who said - man my Mach3 needs to be super charged with a battery. I dunno - the idea of a vibrating razor at my neck is not exactly something I dreamed about owning.
But the damn thing sure does work. And it sorta hums rather than vibrates. I was surprised.
... when Colonel Mustard approached the CD in the Library with the candlestick, turns out the CD had died of starvation the previous day. ;-)
