Quote "Starbucks was one of the last CD stalwarts? ... For years, it steadfastly remained one of the largest CD vendors in America." UnQuoteI wasn't aware of that.
Usually, I buy CDs from Amazon e-tailors or a local place called The Exchange (mostly used inventory).

Peet's saved coffee!
I don't taste much difference between Peet's Sumatra and Starbucks. But I appreciate Peet's wide variety of coffees. Good luck finding Sulawesi-Kalosi and Aged Sumatra at Starbucks.

Yeah it's all simple and pure in theory...
You're certainly correct - I bet someone could point to a "created" or "marketed" demand for things. The various "me-too" products that you simply must have in order to be cool. Product that leads demand.
The electric razor blade maybe? I never met a guy who said - man my Mach3 needs to be super charged with a battery. I dunno - the idea of a vibrating razor at my neck is not exactly something I dreamed about owning.
But the damn thing sure does work. And it sorta hums rather than vibrates. I was surprised.

"local and craft-brewed coffee" good one!
We still don't grow much coffee in Canada.
As much craft in brewing coffee as in cleaning vinyl.
...perhaps that should have been "local and craft-brewed" coffee shops.
The coffee isn't grown locally of course.
> > Starbucks is killing local and craft-brewed coffee. < <
I disagree, Mike. The popularity of Starbucks has been a boom for craft coffee. Around here we have a number of great roasters and alternatives to Starbucks. We have Vivace, Victrola, Zoka and from Portland, Stumptown. I doubt any of these would have existed without Starbucks. David Schomer, founder of Vivace, says one of his secrets of success was setting up close to a Starbucks. Starbucks created an awareness that there was more to coffee than the percolator or jar of instant.

...not what I see in the SF Bay Area although some drip/cup places are doing ok.
You know though that Starbucks has a certain flavor that if you like it you like it. I have been to lots of mom and pops coffee huts and have an Americano and I often prefer Starbucks which usually gives me a cup at least 2-4 times larger for the same price. I don't like Starbucks coffee (only their Americano)
The island I live on in Hong Kong has Pacific Coffee and frankly I find it utterly undrinkable sewage in comparison. I do like a new independent better than Starbucks and they make a superb Piccolo latte that Starbucks doesn't even make - still it's $5 and comes in a small glass smaller than a Starbucks short.
Serious Coffee, a chain on Vancouver Island is probably my favorite of the chain coffee places for coffee. I enjoyed Peet's Coffee in San Francisco as well. Amazingly they sell Peet's Coffee beans here in Hong Kong as well.
...been drinking Peet's (Blend 101) for over 30 years.
Yes I enjoyed the beans I bought from them here as well. Still - I like the slightly burnt dark taste of Starbucks Americano. Same as I like burnt almond dark chocolate. So when people say Starbucks tastes burnt I kinda of say - "so?" It's kind of like the Guinness of beers - you either like it or you probably loathe it but if you like it then all other beers seem like weak arse girly men in comparison.

I think the vinyl and CDs both have gone by the wayside because of technological changes, obviously. But the real deathblow was being able to buy individual songs rather than a collection of songs known as an album, or being able to stream music without buying the physical medium itself. I do think the concept of an album is on its way out. It will continue in the same way that vinyl and CDs linger on.
Such a limited world now. Zillions of selections instantly available, but how many of us really know what we want? Albums include a selection of the artists other works, allowing for gradual change. Musicians used to introduce new works along with the old to encourage musical diversification. I wonder how the Beatles would have fared if all their music was only on 45 rpm singles. No White Album, no Revolver...
Our digital download or cloud access shortens our attention span. What we need is the equivalent of the "slow food" movement. The human brain can benefit from slowing down and fully absorbing an experience, but seems like our culture only craves a quick fix.

How dare they say that vinyl is having a nostalgic revival!
