...rock and roll night in front of my big system tonight.
Pizza, red wine and who knows what else.
Fans of classic rock - for example one guy worked in Golden Gate Park when he was 15 in 1967 during Summer of Love and saw Cream record Wheels of Fire live album at Winterland.
What one song do you recommend I play - anything recent or maybe a deep cut?
All suggestions welcome.
Follow Ups:
...I wrote many of them down but the music takes on a life of its own during these sessions - one song makes someone think of another.
We kept it to about 3 hours and 3 bottles of wine because 2 of us had to work today.
We were all a little tired so we ended playing mellower music - no Zep, Hendrix or even Rolling Stones this time.
I put this list together today as I put the CDs away.
Allman Brothers - Dreams (I like to start with drama)
Hard Day's Night - When I Get Home, You can't do That, And I Love Her, If I Fell
Leon Russel - Roll Away the Stone, Tightrope, Hummingbird
Muddy Waters/Hard Again - Little Girl
Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4, Wishing You Were Here (Beach Boys backup)
Croz - What's Broken (Mark Knopfler on guitar)
Robert Johnson/King of the Delta Blues - 32-20 Blues, If I Had Possession on Judgement Day
Who/Live at Leeds - Substitute
Santana- Jingo, Evil Ways, She's Not There
Yes/Fragile - Roundabout
Roger Waters/Amused to Death - played the beginning of 2 or 3 cuts but couldn't get into it
Bruce Hornsby - A Night on the Town
Jesse Colin Young/Live - Ridgetop
Getz-Gilberto - Girl from Ipanema (MoFi)
Graceland - Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes, You Can Call Me Al
Boz/Memphis - Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl, Cadillac Walk
Everyone had a great time!
No jazz or classical music? The friends you had over not appreciating those genres of music? Just curious...
.. To quote you;
And you seem not to be able to read very well.
What part of rock and roll night don't you understand, just curious...
How's that glass house coming along?
Life's good, enjoy it, I do.

...it's called "rock and roll night" for a reason.
Last time we played Sonny Rollins.
This time Getz-Gilberto.
No one is interested in classical, just the classics (rock).
.
...one of the guys and I saw Leon last year - one of the others has a friend going to see him next week.
Muddy with Johnny Winter, James Cotton and Pinetop Perkins.
I occasionally have session like that with a friend of mine, we go through Black Metal and Noise playlists pretty quickly. The sessions start at night and last until the sun comes up, followed by breakfast with the whole thing, pancakes, coffee, steak, eggs, etc... Usually on the weekends when we don't have work.
I got that same friend into high end as well. I setup him with older equipment I went through, he enjoys vinyl at his home, while I am mostly digital.

But with a group of friends from the Bay Area who lived the late '60s I would start things off with "White Rabbit". And I'd include "Ball and Chain" later in the evening. I don't have to suggest which albums for those. ;^)

I'd be interested in seeing the wine list please.
...we started with a 2011 Gamba Old Vines Zinfandel - big and juicy with layers of fruitThen it was a Cameron Hughes Lot 555 2012 Napa Cabernet - young and needed about an hour to open up.
Finally a 2008 Carriage House Washington Meritage.

Good to know those who know.

Normally, I don't suggest what people should play, but, since you asked...
The Guess Who, live version: "American Woman".
But ONLY if you play it on "west coast" sounding speakers, like Rectilinear or JBL.
Oh, wait, that was last night. Whatever - play it this morning.
:)
Whenever all of the guys on the floor wake up.
... I'm about to have my first libation of the evening here. I toast you are having/had a successful evening.
Care to name any cuts you played from all the suggestions given?
Cheers.

Too obvious???
Have fun!!
I always liked Bad Reputation better.....that and the track Opium Trails from that album. RIP Phil

Think they have it on Spotify. This must be played loud and after your third glass of vino.
Need to have the 3-D cover for full effect.
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Meantown Blues
Johnny Winter And Live
Like it says on the liner notes, this album should be played loud.
...Johnny Winter - I like "Done Somebody Wrong" from Roots.
It will reaffirm their appreciation for the classics.
"A Farewell to Kings" was Rush's best recorded album, and that song would be heaven. On vinyl, of course.
. . . as used in "The Shining". ;-)
...right, Chris.
....only a section from the third movement (the Adagio) was used. If they start the piece from the beginning, I suspect that most 'philes would be hard-pressed to identify it correctly.
Than again, there are Bartok fans (like myself) who have five different versions of it.
Karajan was the conductor for the version used in Kubrick's film, with the recording being from 1949, as I recall.
Many folks like the Reiner version, especially for sonics.
However, this is March, not October and Halloween. Scary, weird music might not be exactly what the party boys had in mind........
(Oh, and my vote goes to JA's "White Rabbit". A real 60's counter-culture classic. But there are countless other great choices, as evidenced by the cool suggestions from so many inmates. Tough call.)
Actually, it's a little joke between the OP and myself. I was over at his house some years ago to listen to his system, and one of the test CD's I brought was the Reiner/CSO MSPC. ;-)
I didn't realize the recording used in The Shining was the 1949 Karajan (Philharmonia, not BPO) - interesting. I like a lot of MSPC's myself, including Reiner, Skrowaczewski, Dorati, the recent Edward Gardiner, Ivan Fischer, Esa-Pekka. . .
.... as he hadn't taken the helm of the BPO, yet. That was in '55, after Furtwangler.
I have many of those versions of MSPC myself, by the way.
Glad to meet another Bartok fan.
Bela's my boy. ;-)

or any of Chuck Berry's hits ...
-The Pretenders (before James Scott passed - love Chrissie Hynde's vocals and rythym guitar)
-Natalie Merchant Live/New York (only 15 years old, but a great live band/perfomance)
Other stuff:
-Ten Years After/something(s) from "A Space in Time"
-CSN&Y - pick your favorite(s)
-Steve Miller's "Quicksilver Girl"
-Windwood's double LP (take your pick).
Natalie Merchant was born in 1963. The Live Concert in New York was in 1999. That would make her 36, not 15.
Natalie would have been 35 years old when the concert was recorded in the summer of 1999 (again her B-Day is in October).
I'm somewhat of a pismire myself (PS Gary's definition;-), and thanks for prompting me to exercise my brain as it definitely needs it @ this point in time.
in June of 1999 (making it 15 years old).
Natalie Merchant is 51 years old, being that her B-Day is not until October.
You did say you wanted to rock!
...thanks - great choices.
for Paul Butterfield's "Drunk Again" (the Gordens Dry Gin lawsuit;-) as they go hand-in hand for the time period.
Realize that neither are R&R, but I'd guess that your friends 60 & older would get a kick out of listening to the duo.
Maybe just source them from YouTube if you have the capability.
1. Welcome to my nightmare ~ Alice Cooper
2. The Boys Light Up ~ Australian Crawl.
3. Old Time Rock & Roll ~ Bob Segar
4. You May Be Right ~ Billy Joel.
5. The Load Out / Stay ~ Jackson Brown.
Have fun mate, with enough booze even Jingle Bells will be a winner.
Cheers :)

"Have you a water buffalo?"
...thanks - love Skateaway and those.
We tend to be so insular in our listening. I recently had a couple of friends from work that are not into audio the way I am, but are into music. They came armed with their favorite music and an open mind to what I would play. It was so much fun. They know my system and look forward to playing their music on it. System affirmation? Maybe. I do kind of look for that. At the end of the evening, audio had facilitated a wonderful friendship experience.
...thanks - I gave up changing my system some years ago.
Now it's just about enjoying music.
crank it
...thanks - excellent.
.
...thanks - I'll have to pull that out - haven't listened to it in years.
But in my case it's been just a few weeks.
...I put it on for a couple of minutes.
Skipped through a couple of cuts but nothing grabbed us so I moved on.
Lots of layers, plenty of traditional Queen pomp, nice producion, and it shows how well your system can swing.
One of These Days cranked to 11.
J. Geils Live Full House!
+1 on Waiting for Columbus
Allman Bros Live at Fillmore too!
3. Can't Buy Me Love 2. Get Back 1. I Saw Her Standing There.
...thanks - I already have Hard Days Night selected.

at least on early press UK vinyl copies.
Phenomenal.
"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination" -Michael McClure
...excellent.
My favorite is Red House.
I think I got my copy from a nice friend...
Jack White.I like his music and his albums are allways well recorded.
Some Mountain would be cool,too.
enjoy,
mark
...thanks - Mississippi Queen is one of my favorites - too bad the recording isn't better.
I agree. There was a reissue of "Climbing" a few years ago that was a little better than the original, but still not what I'd call a really good recording. Saw them once back in the day. Was a great show. Corky Laing was just an animal on the drums and a lot of fun to watch him play let alone listen.
...I saw them about 3 times while I was in college at the Univ. of Colo.
They would do a concert in Denver and then come to Boulder the next day and do a free concert in a football practice feel.
The first time they brought Blues Image (Ride, Captain, Ride), their opening act, with them.
Corky Laing was terrific throwing his drum sticks in the air.
They did this 2 years in a row. Then I saw them at Red Rocks in Denver.
Felix Papalardi left and they morphed into West, Bruce and Laing - played the Boulder field house but they kind of sucked.
Mikey, you can no longer be considered an audiophile. Not putting on any of the usual audio geek approved stuff. Say what? Whatever you put on, first fire up the lava lamp, some incense, and have a good time. Wish I was there hearing that fine rig.
...thanks.
My daughter gave me a lava lamp for XMas so it will be fired up.
.
...good choice.
I'd throw on Go Yer Own Way, if you have the MCh SACD, even better. This in one cut that just can't be played too loud :)
Wish I were in the neighborhood, sounds like a great evening.
Other mainstream options, Hotel California or something by little Stevie Miller.
----------------------
"Have you a water buffalo?"
...great selection.
If you're ever in the neighborhood, you're invited.
The key is not to play an artist's well-known or most popular material, which gets played over and over again. Select their lesser-known, but still killer, material.
For example, everyone likes AC/DC. But you almost never hear their lost 1988 song, "Heatseeker."
You always hear Metallica's "Enter Sandman." So play, off of the same album, "Wherever I May Roam."
Alternately, if you don't want to play mainstream acts, choose one of the "second tier" acts. Some good examples include Forbidden's "Infinite," Exodus' "Toxic Waltz" and "Only Death Decides," and Testament's "Practice What You Preach" and "Electric Crown."
The Audiophiles' DJ,
-Lummy The Loch Monster
......The Chambers Brothers
Or: "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" Iron Butterfly
Or: "Dead Flowers" The Rolling Stones
..."I've Got The Blues" off of Sticky Fingers.

Humble Pie-Rockin the Fillmore.

...Stone Cold Fever is one of my faves of theirs.

Born To Be Wild/Magic Carpet Ride
especially if you have the English LPs....
...no LPs.I ordered the Peter Green Fleetwood Mac CD last month but it didn't arrive so I just ordered it again.
Edits: 03/06/15
I would add that the Live in Boston CDs from the Peter Green era show what kind of a powerhouse they were - and the recording is excellent to boot.
David Gilmore's first 2 solo albums.....?
I'm a big fan of Dave's work. Love his first solo album, his second, not so much.
See ya. Dave

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
...maybe "Old Folks Boogie"?
some dead would be appropriate. The 5/8/77 Scarlet Begonias/Fire on the Monutain is great and a fab recording. Just a laptop w/analog outs playng it from YT (select 480p or higher) would sound good.
The first B-52's album is fun and sounds good.
Janis /Big Brother Cheap Thrills is fun too.

AND balming my soul once again with "Seize The Rainbow".
CERTAINLY NOT classic rock, but elements of it in the drive, rhythm and electricity of the music.
Maybe time to lay something new, electric, classic and vibrant on them?
You only live once. Them too.
"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination" -Michael McClure
...thanks I'll check it out.
Last time someone brought Sonny Rollins and it knocked them out.
helluva Sonny!
Completely different cup o' joe, but a true master as well.
IF, you're seeking something more along a "jazz" line,
"Ask The Ages" is the Sonny Sharrock you should seek.
As well as being fantastic music, it is much better recorded than STR
and would "show-off" your system more.
"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination" -Michael McClure
Don't know why though
.
...excellent choice - when demoing my system I frequently use Black Magic Woman from the MoFi version because of all the dynamics and drama.
How about asking the guys?
Proudly serving content-free posts since 1984.
...I always ask - usually they bring some things to play.
But I like to have a few choices ready during lulls.
SPOONFUL
Great album
Have a blast
Just off the top of my head, any/all of "Live at Leeds", Heroine from "Rock and Roll Animal", Psycho Killer from "Stop Making Sense", Styx "Suite Madame Blue" with a late night dollop of Mr. Roboto. Not a ballad in sight.Have a blast!!
Dangit...two more. "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" and Dolby's "Blinded By Science".
Edits: 03/06/15
...Live at Leeds - excellent suggestion.
I can't say I have any friends that can sit still long enough to listen to music on a good system. That, and I'd just hog the sweet spot anyway.
Pretty much a solo thing for me.
See ya. Dave
