Fear runs very strong with some of the Luddites here. All this clucking around about losing computer files. And sure, vinyl is a great archiving medium - if you like mysterious ticks and pops which seem to appear out of nowhere!
Hey! Just joking - we all have our foibles (moi included)! ;-)
BTW, I even take the additional precaution of backing up my RAID drive to USB flash drives. Gotta check out those 1 TB capacity flash drives soon: I don't compress my files (for the most part), so I have 1.5 TB on the computer (RAID drive) right now (backed up onto 3 512 GB flash drives), but that's probably only a third of my CD and hi-rez collection. Once the CD's get ripped to computer, they get taken down to Amoeba for credit, or else they get boxed up and put in the garage. LP's? I got rid of them in the 80's, although I do keep in touch with vinyl at shows and dealers. ;-)
Follow Ups:
cuz, this is what pops into my mind.
I must admit I don't even know what RAID stands for.
There are various RAID configurations, but for our music purposes here, I'd guess that most configurations are set up for mirroring (RAID 1): the same data is written to two different drives, so that if one fails, the other continues and the failed drive can be replaced. Here's a link to a PC Magazine article about it:
I would still employ my IT geek in the event that I go streaming.
I am finding out, in order to optimise the sound, the file based system is tweaky as an analogue set up. In some way it's worse because the technology is not quite matured so things keep changing.
The soundwise, tho, they "can" have an advantage when played a high res rips from a turntable but the proper way of recording from the TT remains cumbersome.
I know I have to do this sooner or later but for now, still holding out with vinyl ( my high res. format ) and CDs.
So one has to feel comfortable around computers to get the whole experience.
I prefer visiting record stores and book stores.
Oh, and driving my car instead of having it drive me.
So you like computers,I don't.
I can't stand clicks and pops either, so the silver discs seem pretty much the solution for me.
Plus, the only exercise I get is walking from the sofa to the CD or vinyl storage to figure out what to play next.
I will wear that Luddite badge with honour!
Remember how good chicken tasted back then?
