Sorry about the delay in the downtime today. I ran into a couple of issues that cost me a half hour or so. There was also a slight syncing issue in the server move and db conversion, so we did lose a few posts. My apologies. So this has completed to move to our new servers. However, there could be some problems with an app here or there. If so you run into any bugs, please note the url of the page and let me know so I can fix it.
I do know that we will run into a few funny characters here and there. This was major part of the db conversion. To be consistent and better handle strange characters, we switched from latin1 to UTF-8 encoding. Since the forum index pages are cached and written in latin1 encoding, some of them may look weird where these characters exist. You might see a smiley face in the middle of a moniker or a diamond or something. If so, let me know the url of the page, I have a utility to fix them.

Still have the issue with tiny font on random asylums on mobile devises.
Last night it was cable asylum.

That one is baffling. Once I get done with this server upgrade and move, then I'll borrow an iPad and see what I can do. Everything is generated from the same code base which is why I can't understand why it happens on one forum and not others and is random.
Just to clarify, General is always ok and Cables does it sometimes. It's never an issue with messages?
What other forums do this?
Thanks
-Rod
I am having the same problem Inmate 51 is having. I have to go to my profile to read the threads. Is this the new norm?
Thanks much
I really don't understand which view you're using and what you want. You can set your default view in the Profile under Manage/Change. It should stay the same afterward, but you'd need to login to set your cookies on other devices.
It possible that changing servers affected old cookies. I don't know.

General never does it (that I know of). SET and Tweak asylums are the most common (for me). Never a problem with the actual messages. Seems relatively random time wise, and some asylums are worse than others in that regard. This has been going on for years. Never with regular computers/laptops.
I thought it was just me, until someone else mentioned it.

I was thinking that it might be the forum mission block on Cables and Tweaks that has a no break code in it, but SET doesn't have one of those. Is Inmate Central a problem too? Or do you visit that forum?

Hey Rod, glad to see you got it back up. Although, I did take the opportunity to use this computer to revise my bio and add some things to my recording techniques page. Anyway...
The forum thread listing has changed, and I can't figure out to change it back. It had been, when I click on a forum, say General, the threads would be listed in a "table" layout - rows and columns - where each row was a thread, and the columns were title, author, number of replies, last poster, and date/time of last reply. (I don't know if I've got those in the right order, but you get the idea.) Clicking on a thread would display the OP, the tree of reply headings, and the text of all the replies.
That's all gone now. How do I get it back?
Thanks!!
:)
Click on the eThreads link. At the bottom of that page, there is selection for Default View. Select This View and click OK to set a cookie to make that your default view. You can also set your default to eThreads in your Profile.

Yes, I see that. IIRC, it was working differently earlier this morning, showing a simple list without the niceties. In any case, thanks!!
:)
Would be happy to wake up to that sight!
A smiley face on my wife's moniker would probably scare me though...
Thanks for all your work.

Use AWS. Seems like it would minimize the perpetual upgrades and would be easier to upgrade and would scale much better.

I'd say you've been doing really well with them all these years - no reason to change what ain't broke!
Thanks for you devotion to the Asylum!!!

The post itself looks fine, but the member's moniker is the "invalid UTF-8 character" character with a question mark when looking at the list of posts for the forum itself.Browser: Firefox

Thanks. Yeah, the messages come from the db and should always be right. It's the old html cached pages that are an issue. I ran the conversion script of that page, so it should be fine now.

I need to write a script to do wholesale changes to old html files. Right now, I'll fix any that anyone finds.

Thank You for your tireless effort!

After a little delay, I had everything up and running at noon. But no one was here. What exactly was wrong is still a mystery to me. Somehow I fixed that problem and the server was rebooting itself every minute, so I took it back to the workshop and threaten to stick it on the junk pile and give it's job to someone that could handle it. Thankfully, she decided to behave and looks good right now.
Cross your fingers.

... I was navigating around the site and one moment all the happy inmates are here and the next moment I am floating around it no man's land.
But it was short lived.
I have been knocking on the Green Door but nobody is home. I understand first things first.
Keep up the great work, Skipper.
Cheers.

TGD should be up and was except for a short time. I've been fighting some silly DNS problems. What is supposed to work just doesn't on the friggin' servers. It seems that I've found a workaround, but I hate workarounds.
